Show Student Services • General Information STUDENT SERVICES The departments and programs in Student Services provide services which assist students in meeting their psychological, sociological and academic needs. An ova-all goal of Student Services is a commitment to solving student problems and in helping students become aware of services, activities and programs available to them. The personnel in Student Services will assist in designing, developing, implementing and evaluating programs to expand the students' personal development and enrich co-curricular opportunities. ACADEMIC ADVANCEMENT PROGRAMS Director: Don Jensen Location: Education Building, Room 010-A Telephone: 62&6870 Academic advancement programs consist of an array of services that are designed to support the enrichment of each student's academic competence and commitment Current programs are as follows: Data Management Service Coordinator: Marilyn Olsen Location: Education Building, Room 011-D Telephone: 626-6797 The Data Management Office provides computerized recordkeeping on those students involved with the various units of Student Services. The databased program offers a variety of reports available to requesting offices concerning student growth and progress, student retention, student campus involvement, student community involvement and interaction within the various units of Student Services. Learning Strategy Seminars (LSS) Location: Education Building, Rooms 010-011 Telephone: 626-6870 Learning Strategy Seminars provide interaction between content review activities and procedures that promote learning, thinking, and reasoning skills. LSS aligns a seminar-type discussion group with targeted general education classes to offa students support with both class content and effective learning, reasoning, and problem solving skills. Student Support Services Coordinator: Maryonne Wilson Location: Stewart Library, Rooms 020-025 Telephone: 626-7009 Student Support Services provides academic support activities for approximately 400 Financial Aid and First Generation students in the following areas: 1) Academic assessment; 2) Educational planning; 3) Basic skill workshops; 4) Critical reasoning labs; 5) Follow-up advisement; 6) Tutoring; and 7) Graduate school preparation. Upward Bound/Pre-College Program Coordinator: David Trujilb Location: Annex #6 Telephone: 626-6798 Upward Bound provides educational support services to high school students who have the interest and potential to pursue a post-secondary education. A six-week summa component offers individualized instruction in basic academic skills and six weeks of residential living on the WSC campus. During the academic component, participants receive assistance with their homework as well as carea and educational planning. Upon completion of the program, graduating participants matriculate in a post-secondary institution of their choice. Veteran Affairs Coordinator: LueCille Marquardt Location: Annex #3, Room 103 Telephone: 626-6039 The Veteran Affairs Office has the responsibility of certifying to the Veterans Administration the enrollment of all students eligible for VA Educational benefits. All veterans or veterans' dependents who attend Weber State College unda the GI Bill Title 38, Chapters 31, 32, 34, or 35 U. S. Code, and the new GI Bill, Chapters 30 and 106, may apply for monthly educational benefits through the Veteran Affairs Office on campus. The Veteran Affairs Office also monitors programs for compliance with VA Rules and Regulations. The VAO provides academic advisement, orientation, and information on upgrading study skills, tutorial assistance, and coordinates with various campus departments to fiimish optimum support and assistance to veteran-students in the pursuit of their educational goals. Work-study positions are available in Veteran Service areas for Chapters 20, 21, 32, and 34 veterans who are enrolled for 12 or more aedit hours, receiving educational benefits and have a minimum GPA of 2.00. Weba State College is a recognized Servicemen's Opportunity College (SOC). S.O.C. institutions evaluate military education and experiences for academic credit according to the "Guide for Evaluation of Educational Expoiences in the Armed Services." Veterans Upward Bound/College Preparatory Program Coordinator: James Kopecky Location: Education Building, Room 011-C Telephone: 626-7173 The purpose of the Weba State College Veterans Upward Bound/College Preparatory Program is to increase the current percentage of non-traditional veterans entering and graduating from post-secondary educational institutions. The program provides participants intensive academic skills development; carea, academic, health, and pasonal problems counseling; motivational and cultural experiences; special classes; and tutoring. ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT CENTER Director: Julie Arbuckle Location: Building 1, Room 145 Telephone: 626-6752 The Academic Advisement Center has been established to assist all students at Weber State College to achieve academic success through: A) Direct advisement to assist students to plan their college careers through an understanding of required WSC policies and procedures. This advisement includes the General Education program, policies and procedures of WSC, as well as those having to do with admissions and registration, referrals to academic departments for advisement in majors, referrals to appropriate campus and local support services, and by providing additional assistance and advisement to undeclared students on academic probation and suspension. B) Advisement designed to better prepare students to achieve academically by establishing a sense of direction and purpose. This is accomplished through the offering of a new-student orientation, Becoming a Master Student (extended orientation) class, other seminars and workshops, and the administration of investigative inventories and surveys. ALCOHOL AND DRUG EDUCATION/ PREVENTION PROGRAM Coordinator: Sharon Parkinson Location: Union Building, Room 427-A Telephone: 626-6408 In compliance with HEA Programs Title IV, Article I, the Alcohol and Drug Education/Prevention Program exists to provide various programs and services at Weba State College specifically targeting substance abuse. The focus of the student program is to: (1) improve education and primary prevention activities, and (2) raise general campus awareness of the detrimental effects incurred by substance abuse. Services include: organized self-help groups, pea counseling for high risk students, referral and after-care support, workshops for student sub-groups, an information center, and interfacing with government, community and college resources. ASSOCIATED Location: Telephone STUDENTS Union Building, Room 241 626-6349 24 The Associated Students of Weba State College (ASWSQ is the student voice to the administration and serves the students both on and off campus. The ASWSC provides students a variety of activities ranging from lectures to dances. The ASWSC provides the opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills and to impact the campus environment by service eitha as an elected offica or by appointment. Elected student officers include the studentbody president, two vice presidents and sixteen senators who represent academic and student life constituencies. ASWSC appointed committees and groups include the Supreme Court, the Senate Area Council, the College Activities Board (CAB), Community Service Organizations, the Academic Board Elections, Publicity, the Association of Registered Organizations, etc. At the time of registration, as members of ASWSC, students must obtain a studentbody identification card which is good for admittance to football and basketball games, the use of gym facilities and many other benefits. An I.D. card is also required for checking out books from the Library. CAMPUS RECREATION Director: John Knight Location: Union Building, Room 273 Telephone: 626-6373 (See section on J. Farrell Shepherd Union Building) The Weba State College Campus Recreation Department provides each student, faculty, and staff member the opportunity to become actively involved in a sports and recreation program. It is recognized as one of the duties of this Department to encourage the studentbody to participate in organized sports, foster a spirit of fair play, and promote sportsmanship among participants, provide facilities for recreation drop-in play, and develop a competitive sports club program with otha colleges and outside organizations.
