Show Business Education/Administrative Systems Secretarial Science General Information Education In the four-year programs, the department offers comprehensive training for top-level positions. The two-year programs offer extensive training for a variety of secretarial/ clerical job possibilities. The one-year program concentrates on entry-level secretarial training. Medical Transcription The Department of Business Education/Administrative Systems, in conjunction with the School of Allied Health Sciences, can direct students to those classes which will enable them to acquire both the foundation knowledge and specific skills needed for medical transcription. Departmental Policies Students for any degree, diploma, or certificate from the Basiness Education/Adtrtinistrative Systems or Secretarial Science Programs are subject to the following policies: 1. Students who have taken shorthand and/or typewriting in high school will be placed in the appropriate level courses by means of an evaluation of their proficiency. Any skills courses that are by-passed may be replaced by elective courses in business. 2. Students transferring credits from another institution must lake at least one typewriting and one shorthand course or equivalent at Weber State College to verify their skills. 3. To enroll in any skill course, a student must have a grade of C or better in the preceding course in the same skill. Prerequisite: knowledge of the keyboard. PD101. Elementary PC Keyboarding and Applications (3) An automated approach to learning the keyboard and the keyboarding of letters, reports, and tables using microprocessors. 102. Intermediate Keyboarding (3) Review of keyboard. Letters, reports, and tables using microprocessors. Prerequisite: Bused PD101 or 25 wpm. 103. Advanced Keyboarding (3) Tables, letters, reports, and other office applications using rnicroprocessors. Prerequisite: Bused 102 or 40 wpm and Bused 200. 120. Computer Shorthand (3) Introduction to computer shorthand theory. Application of computer shorthand in word processing applications. No prior shorthand knowledge necessary. •i^ 121. Elementary Shorthand (4) Introduction to shorthand theory with emphasis upon reading and writing fluency. Prerequisite: keyboarding 40 wpm. 122. Intermediate Shorthand (4) Any shorthand system. Shorthand theory in practice dictation. Prerequisites: Shorthand 50 wpm; keyboarding 40 wpm. 123. Advanced Shorthand (4) Any shorthand system. Stenographic abbreviations, phrases, and transcription. Prerequisites: Shorthand 70 wpm; keyboarding 40 wpm. 150. Business Mathematics by Calculating Machines (4) Problems in percentage, discount, simple and compound interest, merchandising, taxes, etc., solved by calculators. 151. Calculating Machines (2) For students in majors other than Administrative Systems or Business Education. Using electronic 10-key calculators to solve personal business problems. Credit toward graduation requirements not granted for both Bused 150 and 151. 200. Introductory Word Processing (1) Operation of microprocessors for word processing. Involves creating, storing, retrieving, and editing documents. Prerequisite: keyboarding 40 wpm. 201. Business English/Machine Transcription (4) English essentials, letter writing, proofreading, and transcribing machines. Prerequisites: Bused 200. 202. Records Management (3) The management, planning, and controlling of records including retrieval, equipment, supplies, microforms, vital records, word processing, and data automation techniques. 225. Business Communications (4) Review and application of oral and written communications, including report writing. Prerequisite: English 101. 289. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all students in the Business Educatic^Administrative Systems Department who meet the niinimum Cooperative Work Experience requirements of the depattmenL The course objective for each student will be developed by the student, the department, and a suitable employer providing the opportunity for an on-the-job experience. Evaluation of course participants will be shared between the employer, student, and the depart- menL Grade and amount of a credit will be determined by the department. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes, and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used, it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title.
