Show Music Music General Information D. AU senior music majors must present a one-hour formal recital. E. A student presenting a senior recital must be currently at the 400 competency level F. Repertoire for the senior recital must not contain music performed on the junior recital. G. Completion of a senior recital wiU exempt a student from further proficiency level evaluations but not from continued private study. H. AU students presenting a senior recital must perform that recital before a faculty review committee not less than two weeks prior to the recital date. FaUure to pass this committee review wiU result in postponement of the scheduled recital. I. The faculty review cornmittee wiU consist of the student's major teacher, the appropriate area head, and one other faculty member of the student's choice. J. The faculty review committee wiU be present at the public performance of the recital and wiU recommend pass/fail of the recital. K. The senior recital must be completed prior to May 1 of the student's graduating year. Recital/Concert Attendance AU music majors and minors must attend eight music area recitals, concerts, and/or community concert events each quarter. Attendance reports are requried and maintained in the music office. Performance Requirements AU music majors must enroU each quarter and receive credit for participation in one of the three principal major performing organizations for a total of 12 credit hours. Music education majors must fulfill an 11 credit hour performance requirement and are exempted from this requirement whUe student teaching. FaUure to receive performance credit may necessitate additional quarters of participation. Transfer students must fulfill performance participation requirements as deemed necessary by the Chair and faculty advisory committee. Admission to all perioiming gtcups Is by audition Rano Proficiency AU music majors and minors must take Group Keyboard 213, 214, and 215 until the piano proficiency examination is passed It is suggested that the requirement be completed by the end of the student's sophomore year. Those who have not done so will be required to continue keyboard study until the requirement is completed PROGRAM: MUSIC MAJOR BACHELOR DEGREE (LIBERAL ARTS EMPHASIS) General Requirements: • Specific College Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • A minor is required. • Liberal arts majors must have a C (2.00) or better in major courses and achieve an overall GPA of 2.00 or better. • 183 total hours are required for a music major in liberal arts. Sixty of the total required hours for a major must be upper division (courses numbered 300 or above). Specific Requirements: Music Major: • Liberal Arts Emphasis (minimum of 83 credit hours): Music 105 (3), 110 (4), 111 (4), 112 (4), 219 (2), 260 (4), 261 (4), 262 (4), 284 (3), 301 (3X 302 (3), 303 (3), 305 (2), 314 (6) or 315 (6), 317 (3) or 318 (2), 422 (4) [Vocal Majors only], Music Electives (4-7). Private Lessons (12) minimum. Major Ensemble (12) minimum. • Keyboard Emphasis (minimum of 83 credit hours): Music 105 (3), 110 (4), 111 (4), 112 (4), 260 (4), 261 (4), 262 (4X 270 (3), 284 (3), 301 (3), 302 (3), 303 (3), 305 (2), 310 (3), 311 (3X 312 (3), 313 (3), 317 (3) or 318 <2), Music Electives (0-1). Private Lessons (12) minimum, Major Ensemble (12) minimum. • Electives: Music 219 (2), 319 (2), 413 (2). PROGRAM: COMPOSTTE MUSIC EDUCATION TEACHING MAJOR-BACHELOR DEGREE (See program requirements in the Composite Teaching Majors section of the School of Education.) PROGRAM: MUSIC HONORS General Requirements: • Enroll in General Honors Program and complete at least 10 hours of general honors courses (see the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog). • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3. • Fulfill requirements for one of the music majors: Teaching major in music education with choral emphasis Teaching major in music education with instrumental emphasis Teaching major in music education with choraWnslrumental emphasis Teaching major in music education with instrumental/choral emphasis Bachelor of arts in music with liberal arts emphasis Bachelor of arts with keyboard emphasis Specific Requirements: • In fulfilling requirements for one of the music majors, take at least 20 credit hours for music honors credit • Complete a music honors senior project in Music 499 in addition to the senior recital. • A student may receive music honors credit in any upper- division music course with the exception of the following: Music 343, 344, 345, 346, 347, 348, 350, 351, 353, 354, 355, 357, 360, or 361. Permission from the department chair should be sought before registering in a course for honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for honors credit. (See the Interdisciplinary Programs section of the catalog.) PROGRAM: MUSIC EDUCATION MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of C (2.00) or better in all courses for the music minor. • All music minors must complete sophomore performance level requirements before graduation. (Requirement sheets are available at the Department of Performing Arts office.) Specific Requirements: Minimum of 36 credit hours. Music courses required: Music 105 (3), 110 (4X 111 (4), 112 (4), 216 (IX 302 (3), 303 (3), 320 (3) or 321 (3), 425 (3) or 426 (3). Two credits fiom the following: Music 250 (1), 251 (1), 252 (1), 253 (1), 254 (2) (250 is strongly recommended). Three hours of private study and 3 credit hours of major ensemble in consultation with the adviser. Electives: Music 339 (3), 428 (3) as recommended by the adviser. Share a one-hour senior recital on major instrument approved by the music faculty. Have at least one class in music included in the student teaching experience. These requirements are recommended. The division of music adviser may modify to meet individual needs. PROGRAM: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MAJORS-30 Hour Fine Arts Emphasis - 15 Hours Music General Requirements: • Elementary education major requirements (see the elementary education section in the Dept of Teacher Education). • A minor is required. Specific Requirements: • Music courses required (15 credit hours): Music 101 (3), 169 (3), 213 (1), 214 (1), 215 (1), 216 (1), 320 (3), two quarters of private lessons (recommend at least one be guitar). PROGRAM: MUSIC MINOR General Requirements: • A grade of C (200) or better in all minor courses. Specific Requirements: • Music courses required (33 credit hours): Music 105 (3), 110 (4), 111 (4), 112 (4), 301 (3X 302 (3), 303 (3). • Private Lessons (6), Major Ensemble (3). • Students must pass the sophomore proficiency level on major instrument These requirements may be modified to meet individual needs. MUSIC COURSES W * 100. Private Instruction (1) Individual lessons, vocal or instrumental. For those students not pursuing a major or minor in music. HU101. Introduction to Music (3) Designed to give the non-music student a basic understanding of the language and literature of music. HU102. The Evolution of Jazz (3) The development of jazz and its influence on American culture. HU103. The History of Pop Music: Ragtime to Rock (3) Traces the development of popular music in the western world (especially the U. S. and Britain) fiom around the turn of the century until the present Includes investigation into all the major styles (jazz, rock swing, country, folk etc.) as they affect and reflect society. HU104. Survey of American Musical Theatre (3) An analytical survey of American musicals written for the stage and film. The music, dance, plots, character development, etc. serve as vehicles for appreciative viewing, discussion and written critical observation. 105. A Survey of Western Music (3) A historical survey of the development of music through six major periods and styles fiom the Medieval (950-1145) into the Twentieth Century. 109. Fundamentals of Musicianship (3) Melody, harmony, rhythm, notation, ear training, sight-singing and keyboard skills needed to meet entrance requirements for Theory L 110. Music Theory I (4) Elementary harmony, primary and secondary triads with inversions, non-harmonic tones, and modulation. Lecture 3 hours, lab 3 hours/week 111.
