Bilingual/Bicultural Education: Rationale and Models (3) Provides a knowledge base concerning the issues and rationale for bilingual education, and various models for successful implementation of a bilingual educational program. *412. Education and Minority Affairs (3) Examines the effects of governmental, social and economic issues which affect teaching and learning for students of minority groups. *413. Teaching the Culturally Different Student (3) Develops skills in designing curriculum and applying teaching strategies to meet the interests and abilities of students of differing ethnic or cultural groups. *414. Language Arts in a Bilingual Setting (3) Develops skills for planning and implementing teaching strategies to enhance the teaching of oral and written language for students with limited English-speaking proficiency. *438. Student Teaching in the Elementary School (6) Supervised teaching in selected elementary school classrooms. Prerequisite: Special approval of Director of Student Teaching. 439. Student Teaching in the Middle School (6) Supervised teaching in selected middle school classrooms. Prerequisite: approval by Director of Field Experiences. 441/Hthsre 441. Instructional Design (3) Designed to provide individuals with the skills necessary for the preparation and planning of instruction. 442/Hthsre 442. Instructional Evaluation (2) Designed to provide individuals with the skills necessary for the evaluation of instruction. 450. Teaching Social Studies in Grades 5-12 (3) Materials and methods of teaching for skill, concept and value development in middle, junior high and senior high school social studies. 455. Philosophy and Principles of Outdoor Education (3) Provides basic concepts of outdoor education, and direct firsthand experience with learning resources beyond the classroom. 456. The Junior High School (3) The development philosophy, function and curriculum. Pupils' needs and the efforts to meet them. *457. Student Teaching in Secondary Schools (12) Supervised teaching in secondary school classrooms. Prerequisites: Permission of department chair. *458. Student Teaching in Secondary Schools (6) Supervised teaching in secondary school classrooms. Prerequisite: Special approval of Director of Student Teaching. *459. Teaching Reading in Secondary Schools (3) Basic principles of reading instruction; nature and scope of the total reading program; methods, materials and organization of the develop mental and corrective reading program in file secondary schools. *462. Reading and Writing in the Content Areas (4) Methods, materials, and procedures to be used by secondary teachers in all academic areas to enable their students to develop increased skills in reading, study, and writing. Offered in a public school setting if possible. Must be taken concurrently with Educ 364. 465. Diagnosis of Reading Skills (3) Analysis and diagnosis of reading difficulties. Prerequisites: Educ 321 and 340 or 306. 466. Corrective Reading Methods (3) Principles and techniques for remediating reading problems. Prerequisites: Educ 321 and 340 or Educ 306, and Educ 465. *470. Learning in the Schools (3) Principles of learning and management and their application to the school situation. Prerequisite: Student teaching. 475. Aerospace Education (3) Concerned with knowledge, skills, attitudes and communication about aerospace activity, and the impact of air and space upon society. 476. Advanced Aerospace Education (3) Develops an understanding of the political, economic, social and educational implications of aerospace technology. *478. Practicum in Reading (4) Application of diagnostic and corrective reading techniques with reading disabled children. Prerequisites: Educ 465 and 466. ♦479. Student Teaching in Special Education (6) Supervised teaching in selected special education programs in an elementary or secondary schooL Prerequisite: successful completion of mild/moderate Endorsement course work 482. Adult Education (3) A survey course in adult education with emphasis on philosophy, principles, and practices as evidenced in programs and various adult education organizations. Prerequisites: Professional education course work, teaching experience, or approval of the instructor. *483. Individually Prescribed Program (1-9) Designed primarily for teachers fulfilling recertification requirements or personal needs. 484. Practicum in Instructional Media Services (9) Minor is not currently being offered. 485. Supervision of Student Teachers (3) The cooperating teacher-student relationship and the factors and conditions that contribute to successful student teaching experiences. *487. Directed Experiences with Students (1) Directed experiences with elementary and secondary school students in cooperating schools. Students may register for one unit of credit per quarter for a maximum of three quarter hours. *488. Teaching Practicum in Education (15) Student teaching experience in a public school to synthesize theory and practice. Weekly seminar on campus. Prerequisite: Completion of professional core through Educ 318. 492. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) Li order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript May be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis. *495. Teaching Practicum in Secondary Education (15) A preparation workshop Mowed by a public school assignment Modules on related areas are taken concurrently. Prerequisites: Educ 364. 496. Processes of Instructional Design (5) A systematic approach to solving instructional problems through the development of goals, objectives, instructional strategies and field testing of instructional products. The course consists of two modules, including a project contract 497. Seminar (1) *498. Synthesis of the Teaching Program (3) Synthesis of total elementary education program. Modules on educational leadership, professional relationships, and background of American educatioa Service hours required. May immediately preceed or follow student teaching. *499. Senior Seminar (3) Regular seminar sessions examining issues in secondary schools and curriculum. Senior Project May be taken concurrently with Educ 495 with instructor's permission. Prerequisite: Educ 495. 566. Role of the Special Educator (3) Examination of the professional role responsibilities of the special educator in public schools, and die laws and State rules and regulations that govern the programs. 567. Assessment in Special Education (3) Administration, scoring, and interpretating screening and diagnostic tests in the intellectual, social, academic and vocational areas, and vising evaluative data in resource programs. 568. Planning Instruction in Special Education (3) Instructional programming and modification of curriculum for handicapped students served by teachers with Mild/Moderate Endorsements. 569. Classroom and Behavior Management (3) Current issues, practices, and application of a variety of approaches for behavior change, discipline and management of the classroom environment 570. Methods and Practices in Special Education (5) Validated teaching methods, strategies, and practices widely used with handicapped students in Mild/Moderate special education programs. Prerequisite: Educ 566 and 568. 571. Applications of Special Education Methods and Practices (5) Applications to reading and math of validated teaching methods, strategies, and practices widely used with handicapped students in Mild/Moderate special education programs. Prerequisites: Educ 306, 310 or math competency, Educ 567, 570, or comparable courses. 585. Foundations of Reading (3) This course examines the principles of cognitive psychology that pertain to reading. The course explores how students comprehend and apply what they know with specific focus on the relationship between reading and learning.
