PROGRAM: THEATRE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION COMPOSTTE TEACHING MAJOR (THEATRE ARTS EMPHASIS)-BACHELOR DEGREE General Requirements: • Specific College Requirements (see index). • Requirements for General Education (see index). • Psych SS101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Theatre Arts and Communication Teaching majors. • A minor is not required. • Must achieve a C or better in major courses • Must achieve an overall 2.75 GPA. • 183 total hours are required for this degree. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). • Students obtaining a Theatre Arts and Communication Composite Teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Secondary Education Program). These courses must include the following: Educ 195 (1), 300 (2), 350 (5), 363 (3X 462 (4), 364 (4), 495 (15X 499 (3). Specific Requirements: Theatre Arts: • Minimum of 33 credit hours. • Because of the specific knowledge necessary for a secondary teaching career, the following courses are required for the Composite Teaching Major (30 credit hours): Theatr 100 (3), HU110 (3X 121 (3X 211 (4X 212 (3X 275 (3), 311 (3), 471 (3X 499 (3). Social Studies Concepts for Elementary Teachers (4) Fundamental concepts fiom the social sciences commonly found in elementary social studies curriculum. 280. The Problem Solving Process and Structure of Media Centers (3) Minor is not currently being offered. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript May be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis. *300. Interpersonal Skills for Teachers (2) Experiences intended to develop basic skills in personal interaction and adaptation to teaching. ♦302. Understanding the Learner (4) Modules on lesson planning, teaching, learning and applications of learning principles. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Admission to Elementary Education. *304. Media/Computers in Education (3) Modules on media production, equipment operation, computer literacy, and a materials management system. May be taken concurrently with Educ 302. *306. Reading Methods (6) Modules on the nature of reading, approaches to teaching reading, reading readiness, word recognition, comprehension, and assessment Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 302 *308. Language Arts Methods (3) Modules on teaching handwriting, spelling, listening, oral communication, and written communication, site: Educ 302 Field experience required. Prerequi- *310. Mathematics Methods (3) Modules on trends, methods, and materials appropriate for teaching mathematics in elementary schools. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 302 *312. Science and Social Studies (4) Modules emphasizing the methods of teaching in science, and social studies in the elementary school. Field experience required.. Prerequisite: Educ 302 •314. Art-Music Methods (2) Modules on art and music methods in the elementary school. Field experience required. Prerequisite: Educ 302 316. Management and Discipline Methods (2) Modules on classroom management and discipline in the elementary school. Prerequisite: Educ 302 317. Art in the Elementary School (3) (See Art 250) *318. Special Topics for Elementary Teachers (3) Modules on health, multicultural education, effective school practices and gifted education. Prerequisite: Educ 302 319. Music in the Elementary School (3) (See Music 320) 320. Applications of Microcomputers in Education (3) Methods of incorporating microcomputers into the field of education. *321. Teaching Reading (3) An overview of the developmental reading program as it relates to secondary school with consideration given to the reading process, methods, and materials for instruction. *322. Science in the Elementary School (3) An indepth emphasis on methods of teaching science. 323. Social Studies in the Elementary School (3) An indepth emphasis on methods of teaching social studies. 333. Science Concepts for Elementary Teachers (4) A survey of general science concepts taught in the elementary school. 339. Teaching Reading in the Primary Grades (3) Analysis of developmental reading skills with emphasis on readiness for reading, phonic and structural analysis, word recognition, use of the basal reader, and reading for various purposes. Prerequisites: Educ 306 or permission of instructor. *340. Word Recognition Skills (3) Understanding and teaching word recognition skills with emphasis on phonic analysis skills, structural analysis skills, dictionary skills, and spelling. 342. Kindergarten and Primary Education (3) The learning characteristics and learning needs of young children and how these are provided for in the program of the kindergarten and first grade. *343. Creative Processes in the Elementary School (3) Development of attitudes, methods and skills in creative teaching. Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing. 346. The Secondary School Student (3) Health, processes of adjustment, development of interests, attitudes and values of the adolescent *3S0. Principles of Teaching in Secondary Schools (5) Fundamental concepts and skills related to human behavior and learning as they apply to school organization, planning for instruction, and teaching activities. Prerequisites: Educ 300, admission to Teacher Education. Prerequisites: Ed 300 and admission to Teacher Education. 352. The Early Adolescent in the Schools (3) Emphasizes the unique developmental characteristics of early adolescent youth (ages 10-14) and how they affect the curriculum, instruction, and programs in middle schools. 355. The Middle School Organization (2) Organization and scope of the middle school curriculum as it relates to the characteristics of early adolescent youth. Prerequisite: Ed 352. 357. Middle School Curriculum and Instruction (4) Adapting curriculum and instruction to the middle school learner, including techniques of individualization and interdisciplinary learning. 362. Utilization of Media for Health Occupation Majors (2) Basic skills in use and production of audiovisual media for Health Occupation students. Lab fee required. *363. Media Applications in Secondary School (3) Basic concepts and techniques in instruction, and in the production and use of media materials. Lab fee required. Prerequisite: Educ 350. *364. Classroom Strategies in Secondary School (4) Select five modules for instruction and practice in specific teaching strategies from among such areas as laboratory method, individualizing instruction, games and simulations, inquiry and problem solving. Must be taken concurrently with Educ 462. Prerequisites: Educ 350, 363. 365. The Exceptional Student (3) An introduction to understanding children classed as exceptional for educational purposes. 381.
