Show BY Academy Founders Honored PROVO — The early devel¬opers of Brigham Young Academy were praised for their sacrifices by Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson, president of Brigham Young University, at dedication ceremonies for a marker memorializing the academy Monday afternoon. Dr. Wilkinson offered the dedicatory prayer at a large gathering of Daughters of Utah Pioneers, civic leaders and townspeople at the Provo Chamber of Commerce Build¬ing 290 W. Center St. FINANCIAL MEANS Dr. Wilkinson specifically referred to Benjamin Cluff, Karl G. Maeser and Jesse Knight who gave of financial means to keep the early uni¬versity operating. The plaque marks the site of the Brigham Young Acade¬my established in 1875 with Warren Dusenberry as princi¬pal. The building later was destroyed by fire and the Academy moved to an abandoned warehouse for classes until the buildings later were constructed on lower campus. PLACE MARKER "The Daughters of the Pioneers are proud to place this marker in our efforts to mark pioneer history," Mrs. Kate B. Carter, Daughters of Utah pioneers president, said. "This marker serves as a reminder to all those who have attended early BY Acad¬emy and later BYU," she said. Mrs. Carter praised the pioneers who sacrificed much to establish the early educational institution. Lillian Olson gave a review of the story of Brigham Young Academy and Emma Jacobson unveiled the plaque. Olive G. Stone, president of Utah County DUP, conducted the rites. Others participating included Provo Mayor Veri G. Dixon, Stanley E. Collins, president of the Provo Chamber of Commerce, and the Central Utah County Chorus. Several bus loads of DUP members journeyed from Salt Lake City to Prove for the memorializing rites. After the dedication ceremonies, the women toured the Brigham Young University campus by bus and visited the new Provo Temple location. DUP DELEGATES The DUP delegates came to Provo from a noon luncheon at Hotel Utah as part of the 1971 National Convention of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Earlier Monday delegates re-elected Mrs. Carter to her 15th consecutive two-year term as president. NEW OFFICERS Other new officers are Mrs. Beulah Spencer, Salt Lake City, first vice president; Mrs. Genieve Pingree, Sandy, second vice president; Mrs. Laura Cutler, Murray, corre¬sponding secretary Mrs. Rose Brown, Salt Lake City, historian; Mrs. Zella Gygi, Salt Lake City, custodian of relics; Mrs. Ruth Moulton, Murray, custodian of pictuers; Mrs. Zelma Thompson, Sandy, librarian; and Mrs. Jean Crandall, Salt Lake City, chaplain. Holdover officers are Mrs. Moneta S. Baker, Salt Lake City, treasurer; Mrs. Emma Olsen, Salt Lake City, re¬cording secretary; and Mrs. Willa Carlquist, Draper, regis¬trar. |
