Show Capitol Tree Planting Honors Kate Carter Members of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Monday planted a tree on the State Capitol grounds to honor the foremost tree planter of the DUP: the late Kate B. Carter. Mrs. Carter, who died Sept. 8, 1976, had for decades spearheaded tree plantings to honor prominent Utah men and women, and favored most the ruby red flowering horse chestnut tree. So just such a tree was planted in her name by DUP President Emma R. Olsen and Lt. Gov. David S, Monson. Mrs. Olsen noted the tree plant¬ing began in 1901 and the DUP has since planted thousands of trees in the several states where DUP camps are organized and operating. Mrs. Carter, said Mrs. Olsen, had encouraged the plantings to keep alive the spirit of the pioneers who treasured greenery and sac¬rificed personal comfort so valu¬able seedlings and starts could be kept alive in arduous wagon jour¬neys to Utah from the east. |
