Show Beehive House On Site List A plaque designating the Beehive House in Salt Lake City as a national historic site was unveiled this week. Built by Brigham Young in 1856, the Beehive House is located at South Temple and State Streets. It was refur¬bished and restored about 10 years ago and has become a major tourist attraction. Present at the plaque unveiling were Elder Marion D. Hanks, Assistant to the Council of the Twelve, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a rep¬resentative of the Church In¬formation Committee; Elder Robert McKay of the Infor¬mation Committee; Melvin T. Smith, and Jay Haymond, Utah Historical Society. Representing the Beehive House were Jean Dunn and Mrs. Mildred Bradley. The Beehive House was the formal residence of presidents of the Church for many years. Later it served as a home for working girls away from home, and about 10 years ago it was restored to its original pioneer character. Elder Hanks noted that des¬ignation of the Beehive House was an "appropriate and much appreciated recognition of one of the most significant and beautiful buildings in the West." The Beehive House was the second such building in Salt Lake County to be designated on the National Register as a historic site. The designation was made a year ago. Since then, 12 more sites have bee so designated. |
