An interesting flashback in time came with the visit by Harukuki Furukawa, a senior staff member for the National Diet of Japan, to our city on September 8. Mr. Furukawa's grandfather lived in Marriott in the early 1920s, after having financial trouble in his native land. He bought a house on land now a part of the Ogden Nature Center. He lived there with his wife and seven children, as he raised com, beans and livestock. Mr. Furukawa's mother was one of the children and attended the Marriott School, since razed. In the mid 1930s the grandfather died suddenly and the family returned to Japan. Mr. Furukawa met with Mayor Keith Butler and Carl Hodson, 84, and Dorothy Hodson Holmes, 82. The Hodsons were neighbors and schoolmates of the family. Mr. Furukawa was excited by his visit, and said he would like to bring his mother to visit this place which she has always loved. They would always be welcome here. All was not serious business in our community. Lots of fun activities transpired during the year. The first Annual Marriott-Slaterville City Easter Egg Hunt was held at 11:00 a.m. on March 26, 2005, at the Slaterville Park. It was sponsored by the Marriott-Slaterville Youth Council, under the direction of Emily Allred. It was an eggs-tremely successful event, with lots of eggs hidden by the council, and discovered by a large crowd of eager children aged 1 to 12 years. An Arbor Day Poster Contest for the city was announced. The winning posters will be exhibited in the city office. Entrants were asked to contact Lynette Deru if they wished to submit a poster to the National Arbor Day Poster Contest, as well as our local one. Arbor Day this year was April 29, 2005. Lynette Deru, conducting the poster contest, received posters from Susan Bodily, Dorothy Dalebout, Kaitlyn Holley and Chris Freston. The interesting and innovative drawings were displayed in the city offices. Joe Deru displayed a wooden bowl which he had turned, at the city, in commemoration of Arbor Day. Community members were asked to join a volunteer city orchestra, if they can play an instrument on at least a high school level. Woodwinds, brass, string and percussion players are all needed. Erin Holley was in charge of this endeavor. Summer activities in the city were announced in the May/June Pioneer Post Group tennis lessons for beginning and intermediate groups were available again this summer beginning June 12. The first Evening of Music at the Park was scheduled for June 13, 2005, at 6:30 p.m. at the Marriott Park, and featuring music by Ryan Shupe, a former resident. However, this event had to be cancelled later. Additional evenings took place as scheduled later in the summer. On July 18th An Evening of Music at the Park was held at the Marriott Park beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Pizzacato Strings, a group of about 40 young people, presented a delightful program. Kaitlyn and Dallin Holley are among the group. |
