Show Activities abounded in the community for the Annual Freedom Celebration which began on Friday, July 1st with the Seventh Annual Founder's Day Golf Tournament. Approximately 80 golfers participated in the tournament. Saturday, July 2, a Little Miss Marriott-Slaterville Pageant was held. Bailey DeVries was chosen Little Miss Marriott-Slaterville. Bryn Heslington was First Attendant, with Addison Jones as Second Attendant. July 4th events began with a baby contest at 10:00 a.m. Shelby DeVries won the baby Queen contest, with Annie Crookson as Princess and Windsor London as Prince. A parade of bicycles, tricycles, wagons, floats, tractors and cars, wended its way from 700 South to the Marriott Park, led by sheriff's deputies on motorcycles. Hamburgers and hot dogs cooked by the City Council were a big item for hungry celebrants. Booths, crafts, Softball and games, plus the huge slide offered entertainment for the afternoon. An auction was held to raise funds for the new equipment and furnishings which will be needed in the senior center. Community members were asked to donate items for the auction, which netted $1800 for use at the center. A pie eating contest was held, with several different categories awarded for being first to consume a whole pie. Alden Farr was beaten by Brent Butler in the "Challenge" contest. The second Evening of Music at the Park was held at the Marriott Park on August 15, 2005. Those in attendance were treated with some delightful musical presentations by members of our community. Those taking part were Gerald and Joan Taylor, Ned and Barbara Allred, Paula and Summer Okey, the Rob Smout family, the Rock Band of Steve Ito, Matt Tipping and Randall Topper (with a vocal number by Buzzy Ito), and J. R. Simmons. Thanks to all of our talented neighbors for a wonderful experience. A summer picnic for residents age 55 years and older was held on Wednesday, August 17, 2005, at the Slaterville Park. The charge for the activity was $3.00. Shauna Meyerhoffer was in charge of the event which had about 50 of our senior citizens in attendance. A Christmas party was held in the senior center multi-purpose room, on December 15, 2005, for the City Council, Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, staff, volunteers, and partners, beginning at 7:00 p.m. A taco salad dinner was served to those in attendance. Thanks to Becky Burt and Shauna Meyerhoffer for all their work for the enjoyable event. A Senior Christmas Party was held on December 19, 2005, at 12:30 p.m. in the senior center. A lunch was served and white elephants were exchanged. We have some really great residents in our community. At the monthly City Council Meeting held on December 15, 2005, several of these individuals were honored with awards presented by Mayor Keith Butler. Dean and Lois Slater were given the Good Neighbor Award. They were nominated by neighbor Karlene Warner. She said they had been very helpful and thoughtful since the death of her husband, including help with cleaning and repairs after her home flooded in the spring. They also brought her fresh vegetables from their garden and shoveled snow from her sidewalks. The H. Orvil Holley Youth Leadership Award went to Jonathan Ray Spencer, who was nominated by his sister Annie Spencer. For an Eagle Scout project, he distributed emergency preparedness surveys, visiting more than 500 community homes, leaving and collecting the surveys. The Elna Lucas Community History and Culture Award was presented to Shirley Smout and Michael Murphy. Mrs. Smout presented historical information on early pioneers Stephen and Sylvester Perry to the city. Ms. Murphy wrote poetic tributes of our wonderful community graduates' accomplishments, presenting each with this lifetime keepsake. Jim Ito received the Darrell Mecham Outstanding Community Service Award for the many hours he has volunteered since 1999 as the Director of Community Services Department. He also donates a few hours each week as a receptionist at the city offices. How much we appreciate these outstanding residents of our community. |
