Show Outstanding Citizens Honored December 15, 2005 Marriott-Slaterville awards ? Good Neighbor City also honors its community contributors BY CINDY JONES Standard-Examiner correponsdent MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE The community is brimming with outstanding citizenship and neighborly deeds. Several individuals were recognized at a recent City Council meeting for their outstanding actions within the community. Awards were given in four areas: Good Neighbor, Youth Leadership, Community History and Culture, and Community Service. Each member received ac-clamation from the council and an award certificate from Mayor Keith Butler. "We asked for nominees in our last city newsletter and were really surprised at how many nomination letters we received," Butler said. Dean and Lois Slater were nominated for the Good Neighbor award by fellow resident Carlene Warner. In her letter, Warner explained that the Slaters had been gracious and thoughtful neighbors since her husband had passed away. They brought her fresh vegetables, shoveled her sidewalks in winter, and helped her with cleaning and repairs after her home flooded in the spring. Dean Slater said, "We appreciate the nomination and award, and we'll try to continue to be good neighbors." Annie Spencer nominated her brother Jonathan Spencer for the Youth Leadership award. For an Eagle Scout project, Spencer distributed emergency-preparedness surveys throughout the community, visited more than 500 homes and collected the surveys. "The surveys will help citizens and the city to be more prepared in the event of an emergency," Annie Spencer said. "Jonathan gave over 28 hours of service and inspired over 100 hours of service from others." Other recipients were nominated for recognizing graduates within the community, providing historical information about the area and performing exceptional volunteerism. "We wouldn't be the great city we are without the hard work of volunteers and spirit of community in our citizens," Butler said. |
