Show September 2005 it was another Red Letter Day for the city when the offices were moved from the location at 1140 West 400 North, BDO, into the new municipal building, during the week of September 20, 2005. The old office served us well, but everyone was excited to make the move to our new building at 1570 West 400 North. It was wonderful to have windows making it bright and airy in all the offices, a lunch room for the staff, lots of cabinet space, the council room, a conference room and many other amenities. Then of course, we have an outstanding senior center, with rooms for all types of activities, and a large, well equipped kitchen. The parking lot is paved and marked. And best of all, the building is paid for. The last City Council Meeting held in the old offices at BDO, was held on September 15, 2005. At that time, Mayor Keith Butler advised the council that the planned date to move into the new municipal building was September 20. He also reported that at least 95% of the residents are happy with the way the building has evolved. An interesting flashback in time came this month's visit by Haruyuki Furukawa, a senior staff member for the National Diet of Japan, to our city on September 8. Mr. Furukawa's grandfather lived in Marriott in the early 1920s, after having financial trouble in his native land. He bought a house on land now a part of the Ogden Nature Center. He lived there with his wife and seven children, as he raised corn, beans and livestock. Mr. Furukawa's mother was one of the children and attended the Marriott School, since razed. In the mid 1930s the grandfather died suddenly and the family returned to Japan. Mr. Furukawa met with Mayor Keith Butler and Carl Hodson, 84, and Dorothy Hodson Holmes, 82. The Hodsons were neighbors and schoolmates of the family. Mr. Furukawa was excited by his visit, and said he would like to bring his mother to visit this place which she has always loved. A business license for Stay Tuned, a home office at 2271 West 700 South, was approved by the council. Deputy Curt Ricks reported for Jason Talbot, Weber County Sheriff detective, who had been scheduled to speak to the council. He related that the Sheriff's Department has been working on two cases in the community where stolen property has been recovered, and the individuals involved arrested. The names of Elna Lucas, Naomi Eilers and Larae Brown were submitted to the council as election judges, with Gerald Taylor as alternate. The council approved all the individuals for the municipal election to be held November 8, 2005. The Barnes Bank was approved as an escrow holder for development projects to fill the requirement in the subdivision ordinance for an escrow holder, it is currently holding the escrow for a beginning development. The developer of Christopherson Subdivision at 2070 West 500 South has made a request to vacate lot 2R of the subdivision, to allow the developer to put the road into the subdivision. An old building on the property will be deeded by the developer to the city for storage use. The request was approved by the council. Mayor Butler reported that he has been approached by several people as to what classifies a senior citizen who may use the new building. Mayor Butler would like to not have any age limit. President Ilium feels that the mayor should make the decision. Mr. Van Leeuwen feels that there should not be an age limit. President Ilium requested that if any of the council had a change which they would like made, to keep a list. The changes would be grouped together so that only one public hearing would be held, and the matters could go to the planning commission at the same time. Mr. Van Leeuwen suggested a letter be sent to Paula Okey, expressing appreciation for the work of her late husband, Kyle Okey, on the planning commission. Mr. Ken Martin suggested that a joint meeting between the City Council and the Planning Commission be held to resolve issues with Mr. Frank Blair concerning his proposed development. President Ilium suggested that a letter be written clearly stating the steps Mr. Blair needs to take to proceed with his development. This would outline in writing all the procedures necessary for his development and may alleviate further problems. |
