Show Fremont Softball (Cont'd) May 20, 2005 to the base." The Silver Wolves (24-1 overall) stranded Heidi Scad-den in scoring position after a two-out walk in the third, and had only two more base runners over the final four innings. With its 22nd straight win, Fremont advanced to today's state 5-A championship game at noon vs. the winner of the Bingham-Layton game. "Tomorrow is the day we're going to get our bats going, score some runs and our defense will hold them," Schumers said. "It doesn't matter who we play tomorrow. "I'm not thinking about the winning streak, just one more game," she said. "It will be a great feeling to be on top, and to be the best in the state will be fun." Schumers nearly had her second no-hitter of the 5-A tournament, with Molli Neil-son's two-out, bloop double to short left field in the bottom of the seventh breaking up Schumers' no-hit bid. "The hitters are better so it makes me focus more," Schumers said. "It would have been cool to get another no-hitter, but the victory was way better. This is the best that I've thrown for a four-game stretch. It's been fun and it feels good." Schumers has four consecutive shutouts in the 5-A tournament with 39 strikeouts, giving her 16 season shutouts. She fanned 10 Lancers' batters and had one walk. Layton's Jasey Jensen drew a second-inning leadoff walk, stole second base and moved up to third on a passed ball. But Schumers retired the side on two strikeouts and a foul pop-up. "It's 2005 and you know my odd-year success," Fuller said. "Personally, I was really confident in Haley Schumers, but I didn't think she would have to score the run. I thought it would be a 3-1 game, and it would be tough to keep them scoreless be-cause they had been playing so well. "The pitchers took over today," he said. "That was a masterpiece to watch, with Haili's change-up and Haley's riseball. I never would have thought that we would play Layton to three 1-0 games." The Lancers (19-5) had their six-game winning streak snapped and play Bingham, who they beat 5-0 on Wednes-day, at 9:30 a.m. |
