Show Election November 7, 2005 Host of Weber County mayors endorse Proposition 1 In a united effort to inform the public of the importance of the upcoming vote on Proposition 1 the 911 special district in Weber County we would like to take this opportunity to provide some insight into why this vote is so very important to every person living, working, attending school or taking advantage of the wonderful recreational activities that the area has to offer. Much has been said about the history of the emergency 911 center and the effective and efficient delivery of 911 service, and we hope that you have taken advantage of the opportunity to learn more about this vital service. As a key point to asking the Weber County Commission to create a special district to allow for more stable means to fund our 911 center, each and every city passed a resolution indicating their support for the creation of the Weber Area 911 and Emergency Service District and requested a ballot proposition be placed on the November election ballot that would allow voters of Weber County to authorize a tax levy. The special district needs a tax levy to operate. The center is currently funded by assessing each city a fee and by 911 fees assessed on each telephone. These telephone revenues only fund approximately one-third of the total budget required to operate the center. The remaining two-thirds come from the fees paid by the cities. All northern area mayors agreed that we would decrease our respective taxes and/or budgets by the amount that we are already paying into the center, effectively shifting the funding from many city general funds to the one district fund. Many of your leaders have worked hard to get to this point. We have had to lobby the state Legislature to change the law allowing for the creation of this district. Fire, police and all emergency response agencies have worked hard for many years to pull everything together so that they can provide the best and fastest service possible if an unfortunate event should happen to you. We appreciate all the work that has been done to make this happen. Now, it is up to each of you to support your 911 dispatch service and solidify the consolidation by getting out to the polls and voting to make Proposition 1 pass. If anyone has questions about this very important issue, please contact your mayor, your police chief or your fire chief.
