In baseball action at BYU's Miller Field, Cottonwood topped Jordan 8-7 in eight innings to win the 5-A title; Timpanogos topped Lone Peak 7-5 to earn the 4-A crown. Scadden slid under McBride's attempted tag after a relay throw from first baseman Tiffany Godfrey. "It's like your dream to score the winning run in a state championship game and I did it," Scadden said. "This hasn't sunk in yet. Hopefully, by tomorrow and then for sure when we get our big, fat rings. There is something about us with the team chemistry we have; it just seems to go." Senior right-hander Haley Schumers secured the Silver Wolves' first state softball championship Fremont had lost in the 2001, 1999 and 1998 4-A finals by retiring Bingham in order in the seventh. "Haley is sicker (sore throat and bad cough) than a dog, but she won't admit to it," Scadden said. "She is amazing. Her mom, Karen, said if the tournament had started on Tuesday she wouldn't have been able to pitch." Schumers allowed six hits, fanned seven and didn't issue a walk "I feel fine and I'm 100 percent," she said. "I kind of don't believe we did it. It's so awesome and so rewarding. We knew Bingham's players were all good hitters, so I couldn't miss spots. We knew they would probably score, so we had to score runs ourselves." Toni Schumers ripped a first-inning two-run triple, and her sacrifice fly in the fifth gave Fremont a 4-3 lead. Older sister Haley was 2-for-3 with a double, and speed-up runner Alix Hoskins scored twice. Scadden, Hay-lee Hoch and Hailey Hansen each had two hits for the two-time defending Region 1 champion Silver Wolves (25-1), who won their last 23 games. "We saw how much fun the boys had (sweeping the state 5-A basketball title), and we got a taste of the excitement. It was fun to get two state titles," Haley Schumers said. "Getting the early 3-0 lead was huge. It built our confidence and got us up," Schum- ers said. The state softball title was Fuller's sixth; he won five 4-A crowns at Box Elder. "The excitement never goes away, and this is as sweet as the first five," he said. "I felt like this team was good enough to do it, and it's great kids that make you winners. I've been blessed with gifted athletes." BINGHAM 12, LAYTON 1: The Miners took a 10-0 third-inning lead over the Lancers and pounded out 16 hits, including five for extra bases. Layton (19-6), which advanced to the round of four undetected teams for the first time in school history, had only three hits vs. Bingham. Fremont High's Haley Schumers slides into second base as Bingham's Magan Nieman tags her out in the third inning of the state 5-A softball championship game in Holladay on Friday.
