Show AN OLD PAPER TELLS OF EARLY TRIP TO IDAHO John Taylor, Lorenzo Snow and Others Three Days Going to Paris April 23 1923 At the present day and modern method of transportation, it requires about seven or eight hours ride in an automobile to make the trip from Salt Lake City to Paris, Idaho. In August 1877, Elders John Taylor, Lorenzo Snow, Franklin D. Richards and other church officials, spent three days traveling by horse-drawn vehicles in making the journey thru Mink Creek and Emigration canyon. An interesting account of this trip was printed in the Deseret News under date of September 5, 1877. The Journal is indebted to P.C. Jensen of Brigham City for a copy of this old paper which also contains the account of the death of Brigham Young and an account of his funeral services, including the remarks made on that occasion by several speakers. The article about the trip to Paris reads as follows: Special Conference.--Elder John Taylor left this city on Wednesday for PAris, Bear Lake County, Idaho, to organize the Bear Lake Stake of Zion. He was accompanied by Elders Lorenzo Snow, F.D. Richards and A. Carrington; also by Brother Geo. C. Lambert, R.R. Anderson and Geo. F. Gibbs. The party left Franklin the following day in three carriages driven by Brothers Jedda Blair and James Anderson, from Logan, and by Brother Nelson from Franklin. They reached Mink Creek that day, a distance of about 22 miles, where they camped, and were met by Bishop Wm. Budge and Brother Stucki. Next day they were met in Emigration Canyon by President C.C. Rich, Bishop Horne, Elders Geo. B. Spencer and Walter Hoge, arriving at Paris at 3 o’clock p.m. The Conference was held in the Bowery, commencing at 10 o’clock Bowery, commencing at 10 o’clock a.m., on Saturday, the 25th, and continued until Sunday afternoon. The forenoon meeting of Saturday was addressed by Elders A. Carrington and Lorenzo Snow; and that of the afternoon by Elder F. D. Richards. When Elder Taylor, after occupying a short time speaking on the duties of the various offices of priesthood, presented the following nominations, which were unanimously sustained: For President of the Bear Lake Stake of Zion, Wm. Budge; James H. Hart and George Osmond as his Counselors. President of the High Priests’ Quorum, Niels Wilhelmsen. As Bishop of Paris 1st Ward, Henry J. Jorne; Second Ward, Robert Prince; Bishop of Georgetown ward, Henry Lewis; Bennington, Jos. Moore; Preston, H.H. Dalrymple; Ovid, Peter Jensen; Liberty, Edwin N. Austin; St. Charles, John A. Hunt; and Montpelier, Charles Robinson. On Sunday morning Elders A. Carrington and Lorenzo Snow were the speakers. And Elder Taylor presented the following nominations, which were sustained without a dissenting vote-- Bishop of Bloomington, Wm. Hulme; Fishhaven, Robert Pope; Laketown, Ira Nebeker; Meadowville, Jos, Kimball; Randolph, Pandolph S. Stewart; Woodruff, Wm. H. Lee. No appointments were made for Eden, Berne and Soda Springs, but will be when the Presidency of the Stake, in connection with Elder Chas. C. Rich make their intended visit through the county to complete the organization of the Lesser Priesthood. President of the Elders Quorum, Wm. A. Hymas; President of the Priest’s Quorum, Henry J. Horne; Clerk of the Stake, Thomas Minson. Members of the High Council--John U. Stucki, Minor Wilcox, Hyrum S. Rich, Anders Beck, Thomas Sleight, Lewis Ricks, Harley Morey, Peter Greenhalgh, Hezekiah Duffin, Anders Jacobson, John Welker, leaving one more to be appointed. The afternoon was occupied by Elders Richards and Taylor who addressed the congregation. The aforenamed brethern who had not previously received the ordination qualifying them to enter upon their several appointments, were ordained and set apart under the hands of Elder John Taylor and the other members of the Twelve present. |
