Rich, local poet and author, read her first prize-winning story “Better Than Gold” at the annual Sons of the Utah Pioneers encampment at Logan on Friday evening. Walter Kerr, Salt Lake City SUP president, notified Mrs. Rich earlier that the judges had selected her story for first place in their recent short story contest. She was awarded a gold medal. Although she has had many poems published, this story and another recently published in the LDS Primary Book for 10-year-olds are her first published stories. Mrs. Rich also is interested in oil and water color painting. She has just returned from California where she and her daughter, Mrs. Owen Cook, compiled a biography of Abel S. Rich. She also has been working on a series of incidents of her youth she plans to present to her 20 grandchildren. The prize winning story is woven around a true pioneer day experience of George Sevey, an uncle. Traveling West in the gold rush, he became ill and was left by the wayside by the California-bound group he was with. Another company picked him up and left him in Utah. Treated well by the Mormons, he recovered and became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They story contains an account of his life in New Harmony, Panguitch and later in Old Mexico.
