Conference Time Again Oct 5th ‘ 56 October brings football, hunting, chrysanthemums, apple cider and acceleration of activities incident to the end of the hot weather. To Salt Lake City October also brings the semi-annual gathering of the faithful of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This is by far the largest conclave held regularly in the state and it puts Salt Lake City on its mettle to play the gracious, hospitable and patient host to the many visitors from all states of the region and many parts of the world. The city has grown through the years and, it would seem, so have the conference crowds. Salt Lake residents have a responsibility to do all they can to make the stay of the visitors as pleasant and comfortable as possible. Local motorists would do well to adjust their speeds accordingly, especially in the downtown area. One of the special pre-conference events this year has been the dedication of the handsome new home of the Relief Society at 76 North Main Street. This is a splendid addition to the section of the city. In that connection, the report that 135 new units of the Relief Society were organized throughout the church’s wards and branches during the last year is interesting. Compliments are due all concerned, especially the members of the church’s first presidency, all of whom are reported to be in good health for the 127th semi-annual conference. Oh, sure, great-grandpa had his little problems, but he didn’t have to ride to work standing upon a crowded bus because his wife needed the family car to take little Hepzibath to her baton-twirling lesson.
