Show August 8 Wednesday Nice day I have been home all day - lonesome. Myrenes called dear daughter - Have read some - Ezra J Poulsen of Salt Lake called. I wrote note to Cal Thair Rich and Stanley Rich Retire early Avon and June Smart sent me two lovely trout from the Yellowstone, by a Mr Johnson from Los Angeles- 1st Passenger Train Rough Ogden Standard Aug. 9 -1956 Did 15 Miles in 45 Minutes ALBANY, N.Y. (UP) - A hulk-ing smoking iron beast roared through the countryside between here and Schenectady, N.Y., 125 years ago today. It couldn’t have caused much less excitement than an invasion from Mars. The monster, coughing clouds of smoke and sparks, was the first steam locomotive to draw a passenger train in the United States. It scared crew, passengers, spectators and horses in the fields. QUAINT IRON AFFAIR The first passenger locomotive, the DeWitt Clinton was a quaint affair of iron, weighing slightly more than three tons. It was less than 12 feet long - about the length of a modern automobile - and huffed along on only four wheels. The engineer and fireman stood in the open, balancing gingerly on a dangerously narrow plat-form. Passengers weren’t any more comfortable - or safe. They rode in two ordinary stage coach bodies, slung on special frames with flanged wheels to keep them on the track. They were at the mercy of fiery pine embers from the smokestack and of the track itself. ON WOODEN RAILS That first 15 miles of primitive track between the two cities was made of stout wooden rails anchored to granite blocks and topped by long iron straps. Occasionally, the pressure on the metal bands would snap their bindings. And the helpless passengers would leap screaming from their seats as the iron straps curled from the rails and ripped through the coach floor. Spectators who lined the road-way for the first trip of the DeWitt Clinton on Aug. 9, 1831, raced away in fear from the shower of sparks that trailed in the wake of the locomotive. Scores of small fires were started along the track. Teams of horses for miles around were terrorized. The skeptics were on hand, too. One said the train wouldn’t go fast enough to keep the mosquitos from eating the passengers. But covering the 15 miles in 45 minutes was good enough to put the railroads in business.
