Tribune one - 21st 1956 Truman on Television One of the most astounding statements made following the close of the Democratic Convention was that of Adlai Stevenson’s campaign director, James A. Finnegan, who told reporters he hoped to use the services of Harry Truman to “full capacity” during the coming campaign. We do not known what Mr. Finnegan has in mind for the former President, but it would certainly be embarrassing if Mr. Truman were billed for a pro-Stevenson campaign address on television and by some odd switch the following should come out of loud speakers all over the nation in Mr. Truman’s well-known voice: “What the Democratic Party needs is a dynamic and fighting candidate who will not compromise on fundamental issues. Governor Stevenson is not that type of candidate. He cannot win the election himself without a lot of help. Recent events prove that he lacks that kind of fighting spirit that we need to win and keep the party from falling into the hands of the conservative minority group that would be content to act as caretakers under a Republican administration.” That was Mr. Truman speaking at a press conference in Chicago last week.
