Show Noted Utah Industrialist, Mine Leader Succumbs Special to The Tribune PROVO - J. William Knight, 81, prominent Utah mining executive and industrialist, died Sunday morning at his home after an illness. Mr. Knight was vice president of the vast Knight Investment properties. At the time of his death, he was president and director of the Utah Ore Sampling Co., Knight Ideal Coal Co., Great Western Mines Co., Miller-Hill Mining Co., Tintic Central Mining Co., Ibex Gold Mining Co., North Bingham Mining Co., Bingham Empire Mining Co. and Nevada Park Keno Mining and Milling Co. He was a director of the Pacific National Life Insurance Co. and a life member of the American Mining Congress Born in Payson He was born in Payson Aug. 20, 1874, a son of Jesse and Amanda McEwan Knight. With his father, he developed the Humbug Mine, one of the first gold and silver operations in the Tintic District. On Jan. 1, 1899, he married Lucy Jane Brimhall in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He moved to Canada and with his brother, Ray, developed land holdings in Alberta. During his life he was an officer and director in the Knight Investment Co., Knight Trust and Savings Bank, Knight Woolen Mills, Provo Reservoir Co., Utah Lake Irrigation Co., Goshen Valley Irrigation Co., Layton Sugar Co., Knight Sugar Co. and Ellison Ranching Co. He had served as a member of the boards of trustees and Brigham Young University and Utah State Agricultural College. He was an active supporter of BYU athletic activities and sponsored many scholarships to the school. S.L. Temple President He served in various offices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including presidency of the Salt Lake Temple, counselor to Joseph B. Keller and Thomas M. Taylor, 1908-31, and counselor to Heber S. Allen. Survivors include his widow; two sons, Richard and Philip S., Provo; 13 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Jennie K. Mangum, Provo. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 12:30 p.m. in East Sharon LDS Stake House. Friends may call at Berg Mortuary Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday prior to services.
