Show City Property Owners To Pay $4,268,455 In Taxes; New Record Standard Sept 20 -56 Schools Take Biggest Chunk of Tax Money, Research Organization Says Ogden property owners this year are going to kick through with $4,268,455 in property taxes for the support of schools, city and county governments, the Weber Basin Water District, Central Weber Sewer District and Mosquito Abatement District. It’s a brand new record, even though the total tax levy is down 2.02 mills ($2.02 for each $1,000 of assessed property). According to the Utah Taxpayers Assn., a tax research organization, this is $1,441,782 more or 50 per cent above the 1950 tax of $2,826,673. The total value of all taxable property and the size of the mill levy placed on it determine the tax collection. Both have made almost uninterruped increases since 1942. VALUE GROWS Since 1942 the value of property has increased from $35,151,-891 to $57,293,000 or 62 per cent (actual property taxes have increased much, much more). During the same period tax levies have gone from 41.15 to 74.70 mills. As a result, taxes have climbed from $1,446,500 to $4,268,455, an increase of $2,-821,955 or 200 per cent. During that period of course, many changes have been made in wages, prices, the population, services and responsibilities. The higher tax load is shared by more people with greater incomes. Schools receive the biggest share of the property taxes, a bite of about 54 per cent. School taxes have increased $841,521 or 56 per cent since 1950, from $1,529,843 to $2,371,364 this year. COSTS JUMPED During that period operating costs per student have jumped from $166,82 to $236.35. Ogden City taxes decreased about $7,715 from last year or from $1,236,253 to $1,228,538 as the result of a one mill cut, which was partly offset by an increase in property valuation. However the total tax this year is $373,231 above the 1950 figure or a 44 per cent rise. Over one-third of this amount can be charged to rising prices. City taxes account for a little over one-third of all collected. The county levy this year (revised by the commissioners after their first approval of it) is down .02 mills under last year, but the tax take will be up $20,605 due to an increase of property valuation. Since 1950 Ogden’s share of the county tax bill has increased $173,889 or 44 per cent. |
