Show February 22 Wednesday Washingtons birth day. Nice day, I went to AIME Hears U-Mining Troubles Tribune Feby 22 - 56 Lime penalties and labor instability are among the major problems confronting uranium mining companies, D.T. Delicate, superintendent of mines, Utah Uranium Division, Homestake Mining Co., said Tuesday. At the national convention of American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers (AIME) at New York, he reviewed his firm’s operations in the Big Indian District, San Juan County. “As in any mining district, the mining companies of the Big Indian District are faced with several problems which need to be solved,” he said. “Perhaps the most important is the present lime penalty imposed on uranium ores. Most of the Big Indian ores are high in lime and operators are forced to leave substantial quantities of low grade, high lime ores, as they are submarginal under the current lime penalty schedule. “Another problem is the instability of labor due to limited housing facilities, schools and remoteness from the job. “IT IS DIFFICULT for mining companies to justify expenditures for permanent housing, schools and other facilities because of limited tonnage reserves and uncertainties of the industry after 1962” (termination date of the domestic uranium buying program). Inference on Uranium Output Uranium industry observers are drawing the inference from a recent speech by AEV Commissioner Willard Libby that the U.S. is now producing about 40 per cent of the free world output of uranium ore. In his talk, Commissioner Libby said that uranium production was a 500 million dollar a year business in the free world and that the United States was contributing 200 million dollars a year to that total. Similar statement have been made of late by Dr. Jesse Johnson, director of AEC’s raw materials division. His concern is whether discoveries numbering in the millions of tons of ore as found at Grants, Ambrosia Lake and Big Indian District will continue to be made during the period of guaranteed government prices.
