Her name is probably as well know to the American public today in television, radio, movies, recording and concerts as it is as star of the Metropolitan Opera. What’s more the average American places the name of Rise Stevens on a higher plane, because they realize her career stands far more than the proverbial prettiness of a movie star. It is based on a true talent. Miss Stevens was born in New York and sang from the time she was ten years old. She refused the first Metropolitan Opera contract to gain operatic experience in Europe. Her debut was in Prague, Czechoslovakia in “Mignon”. She is acknowledged as the biggest Metropolitan box-office attraction today. She was chosen as one of the ten best dressed women and also named for having a pair of the world’s ten most beautiful eyes. She has been named by Harry Conover, model tycoon, as “The most striking woman in the world.” But the honor she cherishes most is that of being named one of the country’s outstanding career-women and mothers. She has a son, 10 years old, named Nickay. She is married to Walter Surovy, former matinee idol of the Prague Theatre. Miss Stevens collects stamps which are in some way connected with music. She also collects modern paintings and is an ardent knitter of sweaters, socks and scarves for husband and son. She holds the honor of having sung the greatest number of starring roles at the Met in one season in the entire Metropolitan Opera history with 35 appearances.
