Saturday, September 29, 1956 Salt Lake Tribune The Survey’s Over; Looks Bad for Smokers NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (INS) - The American Cancer Society said Friday its studies have established a link between cigarette smoking and death from lung cancer and heart disease. The tobacco industry questioned the validity of the survey. The society said conclusions of its four-year half-million-dollar study to be published as its final report next fall show: 1. The death rate from all causes is 75 per cent higher among cigarette smokers than non-smokers. 2. The lung cancer death rate for regular cigarette smokers is about 10 times higher than for men who never smoke. 3. The coronary death rate is nearly two to one for men who smoke on or more packs a day when compared with non-smokers. 4. For very heavy smokers (two or more packs a day), the indications are the lung cancer rate is 27 times as high as for the non-smoker. Smog Alert Lasts 3 ½ Hours in L.A. LOS ANGELES, Sept. 28 (AP) - The fourth smog alert this week was canceled at 2:15 p.m. Friday, having lasted 3 hours, 35 minutes. It was the second longest on record, the longest being 3 hours, 44 minutes on Sept. 9, 1955.
