Show ‘ANSWER TO GRACE KELLY’ Ogden Standard April 28 - 56 Dazed Father Loses Six At Once in Mass Wedding By CAROL McLEOD BLENHEIM, Ont. (UP) - Six confused and excited members of a Dutch immigrant family married fellow Hollanders today in the biggest one-family affair in modern Canadian history. “This is our answer to the Grace Kelly wedding,” boasted Leo Dorssers, proud but dazed father of 15 who lost four more of his daughters and two sons from the family farm outside of town. Almost 50 newsmen, photographers, radio and television men swarmed into this town set in flat, rich farm country near the shores of Lake Erie. CHURCH PACKED But many of them were not able to fit into St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church for the mass wedding. The church aisle was crammed with the six Dorssers and the six Dutch Canadians they were marrying, besides six best men, four bridesmaids and three flower girls. There was a festive air about town today. Church officials said there was just standing room only by the time the 150 family friends of the Dorssers and their spouses were accommodated. There was one very troubled little girl, however. She is 7-year-old Wilma Timmermans. Little Wilma had to carry six wedding rings on a cushion down the aisle during the service. And she was wondering - along with the six brides and six bridegrooms - if she would get the right ring to the right bridegroom at the right time. LEFT TWO YEARS AGO The Dorssers family came to Canada from Helden, Holland two years ago, leaving behind three married daughters. Another daughter is married to John Timmermans of Blenheim. Following today’s weddings there still were three boys and two girls on the 11-acre family farm. The brides, Grada, Wilhelmina, Dora and Christina Dorssers and Anne Heuvelmanns and Joan Menheers all wore identical full-length wedding gowns. The grooms, Andrew and Cornelius Dorssers, William Venderberg, Bernard Luiking, Jack Van Hare and Gerard Willemsen, bought new dark blue suits for the wedding. The nuptial Mass was conducted by three priests. Then the newlyweds and at least 200 guests from the seven families involved packed into the local hall for country and modern dancing and a whopping big wedding breakfast. TRAGEDY UNDER THE BIG TOP |
