Show Learning and Testing Centers Library Services General Information J. FARRELL SHEPHERD UNION BUILDING The J. Farrell Shephad Union Building is the social, cultural, and recreational center of the campus. It offers a variety of services to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community. The Union Building is staffed with a team of professionals whose primary mission is to facilitate the learning process by helping students with their inteDectual, interpersonal, and leadaship development In addition, the staff works to maintain an environment which fulfills many of the College community needs through: • Conference Rooms, a large ballroom, and a 225 seat auditorium that are available for rent • Dining Service facilities including the Skyroom, the Gallery Cafeteria, the Junction Snackbar, and The Snack Attack Dining Services also caters banquets, receptions, etc. in the Union Building and elsewhere on campus and off campus for the College community. • Student Activity Center houses the student government (ASWSC), the College Activities Board, the Student Senate, and has desks for various student organizations. • Wildcat Lanes offers bowling, billiards, and video games. Other services include: student ID cards, bus passes, candy and cigarette sales. The entire area may be rented to groups. • Art Services procides professional poster and sign printing, silk screen printing of T-shirts, hats, etc, and plastic name tags. • The Wilderness Recreation Center rents recreational equipment such as: cross-country skiis, camping equipment, game equipment, and canoes, at nominal fees. It also coordinates field trips and programs for courses and organizations. • The Bookstore sells all books and supplies needed for classwork at Weber State College. Paperback books, stationery, art supplies, calculators, clothing, and many other items are also available. LEARNING AND TESTING CENTERS LEARNING CENTER Locations: Library, Room 30, Engineering Technology, Room 216, Science Laboratory Bldg., Room 228, Social Science Bldg., Room 362 Telephone: 626-6802/6803 The Learning Center provides a variety of services designed to assist students in achieving their academic goals. The following services are available: • Academic Tutoring is provided in most academic subject areas and is designed to help students at all ability levels. This service is provided without charge to all enrolled students at Weber State College. • Individualized Learning Programs are provided to students. These modular programs are developed by academic departments in cooperation with the Learning Centers. Students are mastery tested on completion of the modules. One of the more popular programs is in the Rapid Reading course. • Computer Terminals and micro computers are provided for student and faculty use in the Centers. TESTING CENTER Location: Library, Room 45 Telephone: 626-680216803 The Weber State College Testing Center offers avariety of standardized tests for the purpose of placement, evaluation of achievement and granting of credit In addition, aptitude, interest, personality and intelligence tests are given as aids to counselors in helping students select a major or deal with personal concerns relevant to college adjustment The following national testing programs which are of particular interest to students are also administered by the Testing Center. American College Test (ACT) The ACT test is required of all new freshmen students for admission to the college. It is recommended that they take the test early in their senior year of high school in orda to meet scholarship deadlines. A. National ACT tests are given five times each year at testing centers throughout the country. Test dates for the 1987-88 school year were not available at the time of this publication but will be available at the WSC Testing Center. Regular registration deadlines are approximately four weeks before the test dates with late registration deadline being two weeks prior to the test Registration packets are available from high schools, the WSC Testing Center or by writing ACT Registration, P.O. Box 414, Iowa City, Iowa 52240. B. Residual ACT tests are given several times prior to the beginning of each quarter for students who will be attending WSC and did not take the national ACT test Students should contact the WSC Testing Center for specific test dates. Registration for the residual ACT may be completed by paying the test fee at the Testing Center at least two days before the test College Level Examination Program (CLEP) A maximum of 46 credits in the general education area requirements may be earned for satisfactory scores on General Exams in English Composition, Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Additional credit may be granted for satisfactory scores on CLEP Subject Exams. The CLEP exams are offered on the third Saturday of each month. Registration forms are available in the Testing Center. General Education Development (GED) People who have not graduated from high school may take the GED tests for partial fulfillment of the apphcation requirements for admission to WSC. To take the test the applicant must be at least 18 years of age and the high school class with which he/she attended must have graduated Evidence of the class having graduated must be provided if the applicant is 18 years old. The exams are offered each week. The testing schedule is available at the Testing Center. Graduate School Admissions Test Candidates applying to the graduate program in education are required to write the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Milter Analogy Test (MAT) as part of the admission requirements. Candidates applying to the graduate program in accounting are required to write the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). A. GRE and MAT- The GRE is administered five times each year WSC and at testing centers in most states. Registration forms and test dates are available at the Testing Center. The MAT is administered at the Testing Center by appointment B. The GMAT is given four times each year at testing centers in most states. Test dates and registration forms are available at the WSC Testing Center. Coursework Tests Tests are adrriinistered in the Testing Center for various academic departments on the campus. This service frees the faculty memba from administering tests during class hours and allows hinVha to use the additional time for instructional purposes. The service allows students to take their tests when it is more convenient and beneficial for them. The testing hours are Monday through Thurs- day from 7:30 am. to 8 p.m., Friday from 7:30 am. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday from 11 am. to 5 pjn. Summa hours are Monday through friday from 7:30 to 4 p.m. The Testing Center is located in the Library, Iowa level, room 45. Satellite Centers for coursework testing are located in the Social Science Building, room 382, and in the Science Laboratory Building, room 229. UBRARY SERVICES Telephone: 6266403 The Stewart Library provides a rich store of materials especially selected to serve the students and faculty. The collection, continually growing in cultural value, is composed of a numba of types of educational materials. The book and government document collections include more than 250,000 volumes. The Library subscribes to ova 2,100 literary, scientific, and educational periodicals and newspapers. Audio-visual materials are also available. Weba State College students and faculty may also use the libraries of otha academic institutions in the state of Utah upon presentation of a valid student body card. Qiline information retrieval services are available to students, faculty, and to the public. These services allow access to millions of computerized records containing information in all subject areas. There is a charge for these services based on the amount of time spent connected to the host computer, the cost of the use of the data base(s), and the long distance telephone charges. A new addition to the Library was completed in 1976. The building has three floors with a total of ova 150,000 square feet In addition to regular library opaations, the facility houses the Testing Center, the Learning Center, Student Support Services, and the Instructional Technology area The Library houses several special collections, the largest of which is the Howell collection of aprxoximately 10,500 volumes. This collection, willed to the College by the late Judge James A. Howell in 1954, consists mostly of eighteenth and nineteenth century American and English literature. Otha collections include the Lawrence J. Burton Congressional Collection, the Jeanette McKay Morrell Porcelain Collection, the Frank William Becraft Oriental Artifacts, the Paul Branson Art Collection, the Hyrum and Ruby Wheelwright Mormon Literature Collection and the Roland Pary Music Collection. The library hours during the academic year are: Monday through Thursday 7:30 am - 10:00 pm Friday 7:30 am. - 430 pjn. Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Sunday 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm.
