January 4 Wednesday Another Beautiful day, Oertel some brighter, but never the same. Dear girl it is terrible to see her without any hope of recovery - brain tumor - a dear daughter - I wrote cards to Avon, Mary & Thair Dr Jr called and treated Oertel Cleone and Royal called and we went out to Mortuary to see remains of a relative from Morgan Mrs Mildred Rich Arnold - a young mother - sad case Oertel much the same I wrote some letters Utah Shuns Fuss on 60th Birthday Utah observed her 60th birthday quietly Wednesday. No fanfare … No parades … No shouting in the streets. Utah became the 45th state in the Union on Jan. 4, 1896. A special proclamation noting the occasion had been issued by Gov. J. Bracken Lee. But like most women her age, Utah apparently preferred to make as little of her birthdays as possible. January 5 Thursday Another beautiful day No snow and temp about 55o Oertel weaker and sleeps most of the time. Not in much pain but gradually failing - dear girl Cleone came up and took me down town for brief walking Recd letters from all of the Ralph Hardy daughters in Wash D.C, Dear Children Two years ago tonight my dear wife was taken sick and at noon on Jany 6th she passed peacefully to the “great beyond” - a dear blessed, wife, mother and Companion. Now just two years later I am alone this evening and our dear daughter Oertel is near death - a brain tumor - Death would be a happy release for her and I hope and pray it will come soon I am greatly blessed and surrounded by Dr Junior her and his Family my daughter Cleone and her Family my daughter Myrene and her Family and Jim and Avon in Los Angeles at Cal Thair and Family in Fort Bragg, north Overhills I am greatly blessed, but the death of dear ones is always great sorrow Mrs Rich my dear Wife and two grand children the only deaths in past 61 years. We now number 65 blood descendants
