This collection contains 74 diaries of Dr. Edward Rich and his wife Almira. They begin in 1892 and run through 1965. The bulk of this collection centers on Almira's diaries that run from 1897-1947. During that time she documented her personal life and the medical practice of Edward, the community of Ogden and national events such as the outbreaks of WWI and WWII. The diaries also include newspaper and magazine clippings, memorabilia and pins. |

Show WILSON MCCARTHY Had Several Careers McCarthy, Who Put D&RGW On Feet, Dies SALT LAKE CITY (AP)--Wilson McCarthy, a native Utahn who was instrumental in putting the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad back on its financial feet, died last night of a heart ailment. He was 71. He had been president of the line since 1947. McCarthy became co-trustee, along with Henry Swan of Denver, of the D&RGW in 1935. The railroad was in default on more than 58 million dollars of obligations. He and Swan launched a vigorous program to modernize the line. It was taken out of receivership in 1947 and McCarthy was named president. He had no railroad experience prior to this. In 1913 he graduated from Columbia University and set up law practice in Salt Lake City. He served as an assistant county attorney, district attorney and judge of the Third Judicial District. Elected to the State Senate in 1926, he was Democratic floor leader in 1929. He was a University of Utah Regent from 1926 to 1932 when President Herbert Hoover appointed him a director of the RFC. He left the RFC two years later to become president of the Denver & Salt Lake (Mofat Line) railroad, then went into the D&RGW. Born in American Fork, Utah he began his career as a rancher. In 1910, he married Minerva Wolley. She survives as do their four daughters and one son. McCarthy holds an honorary doctor of laws degree from University of Utah. University of Colorado named him “Man of the Year” in Colorado business last year. He maintained a residence at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver in addition to his home here. In addition to his railroad activities, McCarthy was a director of Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co., the First National Bank in Denver and the Denver branch of the Federal Reserve Bank. He was named president of the National Western Livestock Show in Denver in 1941. From 1941 to 1946 he was a director of the American Assn. of Railroads. Funeral services are pending. McCarthy was a member of the Latter-day Saints Church.
