Price Fifteen Cents 63 Dead as Storm-Staggered East Tallies Damage in Blizzard’s Wake Transportation Snarled By Winter’s-End Attack By Associated Press NEW YORK, March 17 -- The storm-battered Northeast Saturday dug slowly out of a mountain of snow heaped upon it by a violent winter’s-end tempest which cost 63 lives, staggered transportation and smashed several ocean-going vessels ashore. Five other persons died in a Maine fire at the height of the storm. Typical road scene was this one on Old Colony Avenue in Boston. Thousands of motorists in New England were stranded. Gale Beaches Warships, 4 Die NEWPORT, VA. March 17 (UP) -- Shrieking winds killed four sailors and hurled four Navy destroyers onto the beach at the height of a raging northeast blizzard. A Navy tug also went aground attempting to rescue the drifting ships which bobbed like corks in the high seas. Visibility was blotted to zero in the darkness by swirling snow. Only superb seamanship saved 11 other ships ripped from their moorings. One Navy officer said “extreme luck” prevented any of the plunging ships from colliding after they were torn from clusters of destroyers anchored at a Newport Navy base pier. Three of the sailors died of exposure in an open whaleboat from the destroyer Preston. The Navy said they were trying to rescue the fourth sailor who later was swept out to sea.
