Show Ogden Standard-Examiner EDITORIALS 4A OGDEN, UTAH, MONDAY, EVENING, JULY 2, 1956 Air Collision Prediction Comes True When the possibility was first suggested that the two planes which crashed into Grand Canyon collided over that desert area many considered the suggestion fantastic. The odds were too great for such a fateful event, it was felt. But it now seems quite probably that collision did indeed cause the death of 128 persons. Furthermore, we learn that warnings have been issued from time to time about danger of collision of commercial airliners. From Washington, D.C., comes word that the Airline Pilots Association has been warning of the mounting danger of air collisions and recommending improvement in vision from the pilot’s seat. Also from Washington comes news that a government report recently called the nation’s 21-year-old traffic control system outdated. The report said passenger airliners now have an average of four near collisions a day. The fact that 90,000 civilian and military aircraft fly the skies over the United States points out the need for improved air traffic control. The disaster of the weekend will surely spur action to obtain safety. Meanwhile we are impressed again with the realization that about all we can do for the bereaved is to extend sympathy. And once more we pay our respects to the courage of those who risked their lives to venture close to the scene of the crashes in the hope of providing help to possible survivors. Nobility, courage and humanity are always to be found in our country when disasters strike. July 3 Tuesday Nice day. Boy worked in garden.
