DESERET NEWS AND TELEGRAM, April 2-56 Ex-Broadway Star Dies At 84 In S.L. A Utah woman who starred on Broadway in 1910s and 1920s, Mrs. Viola Pratt Gillette MacFarlane, died of cancer Sunday in a Salt Lake City rest home. She was 84. Mrs. MacFarlane had been a resident of Bountiful the past 19 years. She was the granddaughter of Orson Pratt and Charles C. Rich, prominent pioneer leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was best known for her roles on Broadway as leading lady with Al Jolson in “Wonder Boy,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Madame Butterfly” and “Bohemian Girls.” Prominent In Music Mrs. MacFarlane had also been prominent in New York music circles. She had toured Europe and England and had taken her own opera company to Australia. She studied music as a student of Evan Stephens, former director of the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir. Later she taught at the University of Deseret, now the University of Utah. She was a singer with the old Salt Lake Opera Company. Mrs. MacFarlane was born in Salt Lake City Oct. 7, 1871, a daughter of Milando M. and Elizabeth Rich Pratt. She married George Gillette, who died about 60 years ago. On Sept. 12, 1907, she married George Jarvis MacFarlane. He died in 1915. Headed Arts Guild In Bountiful, Mrs. MacFarlane was active in music circles. She taught music to pupils until three years ago. She was a former president of the Fine Arts Guild of Bountiful. She was also active in the Sagamore Camp, Daughter of Utah Pioneers. At the time of her death she was a member and past vice president of the Emeritus Club, University of Utah. Her only survivor is a sister, Mrs. George D. Bergener, Flushing, N.Y. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at 295 N. Main St., Bountiful. Bishop Lewis Call will conduct the services. Friends may call at the mortuary from 10:30 a.m. to time of services.
