18 A Tribune May 11th 56 Scanning World News Scenes Africa Mourns Passing Of Slave Turned Leader Reuters News Agency MPANDA, TANGANYIKA, May 10 - Africans Thursday mourned the death of a former slave, once bought for a bar of soap, who lived to become an outstanding leader of his people and a staunch opponent of the African slave trade. He was Dr. Adrien Aturan, honored by several countries for his social and educational work among Africans. He died at Karema, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, last April 24, aged about 90. Territorial rains that washed out communications delayed news of his death from reaching the outside world. Aturan had two special awards from the Pope, two from Belgium, the French Legion d’Honneur, and British decorations from King George V, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. DR. ATURAN was captured when a child by Arab slave traders while playing on the banks of the Niger, near his home. He was taken to Algiers and sold in a slave market. He finally was given his liberty by the Catholic White Fathers Mission of Algiers, which bought him for a cake of soap - one of the mission’s chief means of trade with slavers. His quick intelligence was noticed by the mission’s founder, Cardinal Lavigerie, who baptized and tutored him. After some years he was sent to the University of Malta, where he studied medicine.
