Show EVENING, MAY 7, 1956 WILLIAM KARL HOPKINS Dead at 76 Karl Hopkins, Ogden School Leader, Dies One of Ogden’s best-known educators, William Karl Hopkins, superintendent of city schools for 30 years, died yesterday at his home at 2529 Jefferson Ave. He was 76. Mr. Hopkins came to Ogden in 1919 as the new superintendent of schools, a position he held until his retirement on July 31, 1949. Since that time he had taught mathematics classes at Weber College. He was a director of the Federal Building and Loan Co. of Ogden and Salt Lake City, was a member and past president of the Rotary Club, was a member of the Weber Club and was vice president of the newly organized Sons of Utah Pioneers dinner group. He was a member of the Amici Fidismi, now known as Phi Delta Theta. He was a member of the LDS Fifth Ward and Mount Ogden Stake High Priest Quorum. He was born July 31, 1879, in Kanosh, Utah, a son of Charles W. and Lydia Penney Hopkins. He attended schools in Kanosh and Brigham Young Academy at Provo. After graduating, he taught school at Orderville, Utah, for two years, then attended the University of Utah, graduating in 1906 with a B.A. degree. He was principal and coach at Lehi High School and from 1908 to 1909, coached the championship basketball team of the school. He later became superintendent of the Alpine School District, a position he held until 1917. He then worked as distributor for Ginn and Co., publishers. On June 2, 1909, he married Lodica Seeley in Salt Lake City. Surviving are his widow, the following sons and daughters: Karl S. Hopkins, Ogden; John W. Hopkins, Louisville, Ky.: Mrs. Bert (Georgia) Purdy, Las Vegas; Mrs. Glen (Betty) Lewis, Billings, Mont.; Mrs. Richard (Mary) Squire, Alexandria, Va.; 11 grandchildren, one brother, Dr. I. J. Hopkins, Mountain View, Calif. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Lindquist and Sons Colonial Funeral Chapel, 3408 Washington Blvd., Bishop Ernest R. Ekins of the LDS Fifth Ward officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home tomorrow from 6 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday until services. Interment will be in Washington Heights Memorial Park. |
