Show 24-HOUR RUN Jenkins Sets New Car Mark BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS (UP) - Ageless Ab Jenkins today set a new 24-hour endurance speed record at 118.375 miles per hour. Relieved by his 36-year-old son Marvin, the 73-year-old patriarch of Utah’s famous Bonneville Salt Flats smashed all existing American unlimited and class C stock car records up to 24-hours. The around the clock speed run began yesterday morning and ended at 10 a.m. today after they had driven 2,841 miles around a 10-mile circular track on the granite-hard salt beds. Ab drove almost two-thirds of the run including at 9 ½ hour stint at the beginning. The run was made in a 1956 series 860 two-door Pontiac sponsored by General Motors and Continental Oil Co. “Everything went perfectly,” Ab said after the grueling run. Former record for the 24-hour speed run was just a bit over 109 miles per hour. It was set in 1955 with an overall distance of 2,616 miles. |
