LIKE POLITICAL CONVENTION - The Brigham Young University field house took on the flavor and noise of a political convention Thursday as students from all states of the U.S. and more than 25 foreign countries assembled in groups, complete with name standards, in school’s opening assembly. CHAFFIN News Education Writer PROVO - All the color, spectacle and noise - and 10 times the spirit - of a political convention filled the huge George Albert Smith Field House at the Brigham Young University here Thursday. More than 6,000 cheering, shouting, banner-waving students from every state and territory in the nation and more than 25 foreign countries had gathered for the church school’s opening student assembly. California Wins Before the program officially began the nearly 4,000 students from Utah, the 1,400 from California and the more than 900 from Idaho vied with each other to see who could make the most noise. Considering their numbers, the Californians had the edge. Highlight of the gathering came when dynamic Crawford Gates led the vast assembly through a selection of state and regional songs. The Utahns sang the “Utah Trail,” with special lyrics for the occasion. The Californians sang, “California Here I Come.” The Idahoans sang “Here We Have Idaho.” Students from Texas, Arizona, Wyoming, Nevada and Montana sang a special version of “Deep In The Heart Of Texas.” “Dixie,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “Canada,” and a native tongue rendition of “Aloha Oe” followed by other groups.
