Critics on Lee Tribune Sept 11 - 56 Stir Watkins To New Blast No responsible Republican official in the country has done more to disrupt the Republican Party and to undermine its leadership than Gov. J. Bracken Lee, Sen. Arthur V. Wtakins (R-Utah) said Monday. Sen. Watkins made the statement in answer to criticism directed against him by two retired officials of the Utah Republican Party who have objected to his support of George D. Clyde for governor. ‘Most Persistent Critic’ “So far as I have been able to observe, no other Republican or even a Democrat, has more consistently and destructively opposed and criticized President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his administration than has Gov. Lee,” the senator said. He cited the Utah governor’s recent activities at the San Francisco GOP convention, his suit against the government in respect to foreign affairs and the income tax incident. Sen. Watkins said, “Now, because I endorse a highly qualified candidate who will support the Republican Party’s President, I am criticized by former party officials for contributing to ‘party disunity.’” Third Term Issue.” The senator said that when “Gov. Lee was elected in 1952 he should have known that any member of the Republican Party can consistently take a position against a third term for a candidate for governor, an office which carries with it a heavy political patronage. Such opposition is consistent both with the party’s successful fight to bar a third term for President, and with Mr. Lee’s own stand against Gov. Maw in 1948.”
