Turkeys Win Utah Girl Top Honors A newcomer to the ranks of Utah turkey growers walked off with top honors and $705 in cash, as the Utah Turkey Federation wound up convention sessions in Newhouse Hotel Saturday. Miss Jerrie Shand, 15-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Arthur Shand, Manti, dominated the turkey show held in conjunction with the convention. Her four entries won show champion, second-place hen, second-place tom and fourth-place hen. MISS SHAND, making her first experiment with turkeys as a 4-H project, received the highest price ever paid for a champion bird when her prize entry brought $510 at open auction. Her three sale birds grossed $705 - a record take home pay for the annual show. In addition, she received a radio, trophies, ribbons and cash prizes from the federation’s show committee. Purchaser of the record-priced turkey was William A. Barlocker, St. George, outgoing federation president, who declared in his annual report that Utah’s turkey exports are the highest in the nation. He declared that 90 per cent of Utah’s 2,717,000 turkeys - the 1956 production total - will be marketed outside the state, indicating a national demand for Utah turkeys.
