Fairless Aids Ike Standard Dec 25 - 56 Benjamin F. Fairless, former United States Steel Co. chairman, is at the head of a committee known as the President’s Citizen Advisers on the Mutual Security Program. This group has just departed on a 22,000-mile journey to last seven weeks, during which the members will check on the nation’s multi-million dollar foreign aid program. We suspect that a great many taxpayers will give three cheers over the appointment of this committee and especially over the selection of Mr. Fairless to be the chairman. There is a growing feeling that the aid program deserves a thorough inspection and evaluation and perhaps an overhaul. The departure of the committee on its inspection trip means that President Eisenhower will not have complete recommendations on foreigns aid for Congress in his state of the union message, but will wait for the report Mr. Fairless will make to him late in the winter. A great many persons will hope that the tough-minded retired steel executive will recommend an end to foreign economic aid. He is not likely to make such recommendation, but it is quite possible he will have much to say about reduction in the amount and far greater supervision of the way it is spent.
