July 2005 Activities abounded in the community for the Freedom Celebration the weekend of July 4, 2005. Approximately 80 golfers attended the Founder's Day Golf Tournament. Bailey DeVries was chosen Little Miss Marriott-Slaterville, on July 2, 2005. Bryn Heslington was First Attendant, with Addison Jones as Second Attendant. Shelby DeVries won the baby Queen contest, with Annie Crookson as Princess and Windsor London as Prince. A parade of bicycles, tricycles, wagons, floats, tractors and cars, wended its way from 700 South to the Marriott Park, led by sheriff's deputies on motorcycles. A pie eating contest was held, with several different categories awarded for being first to consume a whole pie. Al Farr was beaten by Brent Butler in the "Challenge" contest. Hamburgers and hot dogs cooked by the City Council were a big item for hungry celebrants. Booths, crafts, and games, plus the huge slide offered entertainment for the afternoon. An auction netted $1800 for use at the new senior citizen center. Announcement of the elected positions open for filing for this year's election was made in the July Pioneer Post. Three positions are open, Mayor, councilor-west district, and councilor-east district. The filing can be made between July 15, 2005 and August 15, 2005. Deadline is no later than 5:00 p.m. on August 15. Minimum requires to qualify as a candidate, as required by state law, as well as regulations governing campaign finance disclosure will be reviewed by Becky Burt with each person who files. UDOT has postponed the widening of 1900 West until further notice. The city will be making road repairs throughout the summer, including portions of 1200 West. An Evening of Music at the Park was held at the Marriott Park at 6:30 p.m. on July 18th. The Pizzacato Strings, a group of about 40 young people, presented a delightful program. Kaitlyn and Dallin Holley are among the group. Business licenses were approved for five new businesses at the July 21, 2005, City Council Meeting. Gail Woodward, Stark Brothers, Inc., concrete construction, At Your Service Specialties, auto repair, Advanced Asphalt Restoration, repairing asphalt shingles, and Andy's Diesel Repair, are alt welcomed into our community and wished success in their endeavors. Blaine Holmes, West Haven City Councilor, presented the resolution on joint ambulance request for proposals and agreement between local government entities, which has a few changes from that previously discussed. West Haven City will pay for the cost of publishing notices on the RFP. The resolution was approved. Resolutions for interlocal agreements with Weber County for animal control services and Crime Scene Investigations (technical forensic services) were also approved by the council after discussion. After discussion and minor changes, the council approved Ordinance 2005-07, amend the zoning ordinance as recommended by the planning commission. This affects conditional uses in the M-1 zone, particularly relating to storage units, fences and junk cars. The construction of our new city office building is progressing in a timely fashion. Mayor Keith Butler is tracking the allotted funds for the building. A traffic study was completed on the corner of 200 South and approximately 2100 West to see if lowering the speed limit in that area is warranted. The average speed north bound was 19 m.p.h. and south bound was 28 m.p.h. Mayor Butler reported that he has declared candidacy for mayor for the next four years. Ken Martin suggested that the newsletter be used by the city to request citizens to clean up junky yards. He also suggested that if Bill Morris, City Administrator, could write a letter regarding yard clean-up, Mr. Martin could deliver it to residents where a problem exists.
