Show Fremont High School's Girl's Cross-Country Commended for Great Year January 2, 2005 2004 a banner year for Top of Utah teams With the year 2004 now officially in the books, the Standard-Examiner would like to congratulate the 14 Top of Utah teams that went all the way in their respective events and captured state championship trophies. Another 13 teams finished second and captured a runner-up trophy. Here is a quick recap of each team's success: BASEBALL: The flood of titles into Garland continued in May, when Bear River rallied from an opening-day state tournament loss to win the state 3-A title. BASKETBALL (BOYS): While no team won a state title, Bear River, Morgan, Northridge and Bonneville each advanced to the semifinals of their respective tournaments BASKETBALL (GIRLS): The Trojans' girls team continued its dominating play, wrapping up a 24-1 season with the state 3-A title. Layton's girls team finished second and Region 1 champion Fremont advanced to the semifinals. CROSS COUNTRY (BOYS): Davis and St. Joseph each finished second in their respective meets, while Ogden was third in the 3-A meet. Justin Johnson ? Prep Notes CROSS COUNTRY (GIRLS): Fremont's girls squad continued its five-year dominating reign with a 76-point win over Weber in the state 5-A meet. The Silver Wolves went on to finish fifth at the Nike Team Nationals in December, and don't graduate a single runner of their top seven. The Warriors edged out Region 1 rival Davis for second by two points. DRILL TEAM: Box Elder won its seventh state 4-A title in eight years, finishing first in dance, military and novelty. Ogden's team finished first in the dance routine. FOOTBALL: Davis won the state 5-A championship marking the first time since 1976 they have won a state title. Bear River, which won the 3-A crown, finished the season 13-0 and are 25-1 in the last two seasons with a 23-game winning streak. GOLF: Ogden came close to winning the 3-A championship, finishing tied for first place, but the Tigers came up short in a playoff and settled for runner-up honors. Weber finished second in the 5-A tournament. SOCCER (BOYS): For the second straight year, Top of Utah teams swept the two largest classifications, with Weber winning the 5-A title and Sky View claiming the 4-A trophy. Morgan finished second in the 3-A tournament. SOCCER (GIRLS): Weber and Davis each advanced to the semifinal round of the 5-A tournament and were the farthest advancing Top of Utah teams. SOFTBALL: Bonneville won its second straight title, dominating the 4-A tournament, while Bear River earned runner-up honors to Tooele in the 3-A tournament. SWIMMING (BOYS): Ogden finished second in the 3-A meet, while Logan finished second in the 4-A meet, earning both a runner-up trophy SWIMMING (GIRLS): The two highest finishers from the Top of Utah were Mountain Crest and Logan in 4-A, who finished third and fourth respectively. TENNIS (BOYS): Northridge and Viewmont were fifth and sixth respectively in the 5-A meet and were the highest local finishers. TENNIS (GIRLS): Weber and Davis finished third and fourth in 5-A and St. Joseph tied for third in 1-A, marking the highest Top of Utah finishers. TRACK (BOYS): Box Elder dominated the field in earning the state 4-A title, while Davis and Weber were second and third in the 5-A meet. St. Joseph finished second in the 1-A meet. TRACK (GIRLS): Davis and St. Joseph each carted home team trophies with first-place finishes in the 5-A and 1-A meets. Weber was second in 5-A and Ogden finished just two points out of first in 3-A. VOLLEYBALL: Viewmont won its second straight 5-A title, while Morgan finished second in the 3-A tournament. WRESTLING: Viewmont and Weber finished first and second in the 5-A meet, while Mountain Crest and Box Elder were second and third in 4-A. And finally, with a number of talented wrestling, swimming, drill teams, and boys and girls basketball teams in the northern Utah area, don't be surprised to see another flood of titles head this way during the 2005 season.
