Dick Scadden had a feeling Friday that his granddaughter, Heidi, would be a central figure in the state 5-A softball title game vs. undefeated Region 2 champion Bingham. "I left her a message on her cell phone that today is your day to shine," he said. Heidi Scadden, a junior speedster who plays center field, scored the winning run from second base with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, boosting Fremont to a 5-4 victory over the Miners at the Cottonwood Complex. Scadden, a left-handed slap hitter, hit the ball to the right side and with nobody covering first, she beat Bingham second baseman Stacia Vonk to the bag. Scadden stole second, and scored when catcher Katie McBride threw the ball into center field. "I told myself I've got to get on base," Scadden said. "It was an off-speed pitch so I was just trying to get it in play. It was steal second like usual, and I popped up (after sliding) because I didn't know where the ball was. "I looked and saw the ball going to center field and I took off to third," she said. "Coach (Jim) Fuller told me to go, and I went. I saw the |
