E members sang two songs Larue Waldron directing LoRaine Wildinson at the Ah Johnson read the history r grandfather George Jack He was born in England inAs a young boy he worked rmers. His job was to scare crows oft crops with two large flat boards like tennis rackets. He hit them together to scare them. At night he tried to drive them toward an old barn. For this he was paid 2 1/2 cents per day. George came to America in a sailing vessell in 1862 and drove an ox team across the plains to Utah arriving in October 1862. He went to American Fork to work. He married Ruth Wagstaff and they bought farmland and built a home. In a letter he received from his uncle in England was the seed from a locust tree. George planted this in his yard and it grew into a beautiful tree and was the first locust tree in Utah. George was a successful farmer and was very active in the LDS church all his life. He died Oct. 1906 in American Fork and was buried there. The lesson "Pioneer Museums and Relic Halls" was given by Lois Peterson. She told about our Morgan Pioneer Relic Buildings. The old log cabin that is on the Morgan First and Second Ward lot was the first home built in Weber Valley, the place now known as Peterson and this was where the first male child baby was born. He was Charles Russell Stevens, born Sept. 23,1857. This log cabin was built by George Henry Peterson in 1857. It was moved to the present site in Morgan in 1931 and was dedicated by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers as a relic hall in 1931. It was not long until a larger place was needed to hold the relics so plans were started and it was to be built on the grounds of the County courthouse. Alice Wilkinsen and Elsie Bell worked very hard and long hours raising money for the building planning projects for funds and planning the building. Ground was broken in 1948 and Mr. Walter London began construction of this new relic hall. Alice Wilkinsen was county president and she moved away and Elsie Bell became county president. The officers of the county camp and of other camps in the county worked hard serving dinners to raise money to pay for r the building. A dedication ceremony was held April 26, 1953. It is a beautiful building and holds most n of the relics. A few are still in the log cabin. The prayer was given by Thelma Bell. Refreshments were served by Manilla Carter, Deleen Sommers, Flora Tonks and Veloy Dickson. |
