The history of the Durrant family was given by Celeste Durrant and was written by Emma Durrant Porter on June 27, 1953. Emma's grandparents, Wil¬liam and Phoebe Hoar Durrant were born in England. They were converted to the Mormon religion and wanted to take their family to America. They had 11 children and not enough money for all, so they sent one or more children at a time as they earned enough money. They sent the oldest daughter Jane first as she was 19 years old and could take care of the other children as they came over. When crossing the plains, she met and married Thomas Adams and lived in Porterville. It took years for all the family to come to Utah. In 1871 William and Phoebe came with the rest of their family including Lorenzo. They settled in Porterville and Lor¬enzo was the father of Emma Durrant Porter, The oldest boy James was last to come. He was the grand¬father of Lee Durrant. Owen Durrant was Lee's father and Nettie was his mother. They settled in Morgan. The lesson was given by Elma Dickson on "Eli Wiggill". He was born in England November 5, 1811 to Isaac and Elizabeth Wiggill. In December 1819 his family immigrated to the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Four thousand Britishers were sent to build a colony there. His life was very interesting and exciting. They endured many hardships in settling there. There was a constant state of war between the natives and settlers. He married Susannah Bentley in 1831 and they had nine children. He was a missionary for the Wesleyon Methodist Church, preaching to the natives for several years. Mormon missionaries came in 1853 and he and some of his family joined the church. They came to America reaching Utah in September 1861. They lived in Salt Lake City and Kaysville. He died April 13, 1884 at age 72 vears. |
