Show State Tourney Sidelights BY LES GOATES THE state championship Jordan high school basketball team itself, was no happier Saturday night after beating Ogden in the titular match than the boys who won THE DESERET NEWS all- state silver and gold medals, as the newest additions to the great¬est honor roll in all basketball. The medals are the finest ever given for this honor—large thick silver shields, with gold basketballs mounted in the center. The in¬scription reads: "Deseret News-Official All-State-1935." The winners were: Denby Wade, Dixie and Phil Revell, Ogden, forwards; Neal Carr roll, Jordan, center: LaMar Briggs, Ogden and Kline Black, Jordan, guards. For a team picked on three-days tournament play, the NEWS all- state five held up very well indeed on the fourth night. The only players who might have had a good chance of replacing the five selected were: Jack Christensen, Jordan forward and star of the championship finale and Sherman Wright, Murray center-guard. These two stars made the second team and it's too bad they had to do their best work after the team had been picked. THE NEWS really has to come out with its popular selection Saturday night at the tournament as it has no more edi¬tions until Monday. Denby Wade, with 57 points, won high scoring honors at the tournament. The Dixie Flier had 23 field goals and 11 free throws. Denby made 24 points in the first tournament game, 11 in the second game against Ephraim, 14 in the Ogden game and eight in the finale against Uintah. This averages up to 14.3 points per game. Baldwin, the crack long-distance shooter from Beaver led all the centers in the scoring race with 32 points, with Heaton of Dixie at close second with 31 points. The leading guard Was Bogden of Mur¬ray, with 40. Kline Black, the all- state man was second with 25. The summary of leading scorers: FORWARDS g. t. f. p. Bruce sat under the north basket where the wild and wooly athletes did an Annette Kellerman into the crowd no less than 5 times. The little fellow was one of the victims with a peeled shin from his knee down to hitf ankle. "If I come next year," quavered the lad," I want a seat up stairs They can't jump that high." Ralph Belnap of Ogden writes in to correst the News report of the best record ever made in individual scoring at the state tournament: Mr. Belnap submits the following report from the 1913 state tourna-ment held in the B. Y. U. gym at Provo: A. Belnap of Weber vs. Wasatch: Foul tries Fouls Goals Points 20 17 7 31 A. Belnap of Weber vs. Lehi: Foul tries Fouls Goals Points 23 19 8 35 A. Belnap of Weber vs. L. D. S. Foul tries Fouls Goals Points 33 28 6 40 These performances beat the record credited to Morris Roberts of Lehi in 1922. The writer was one of the luckless Lehities who got a close glimpse of this same Mr. Belnap in that tournament and re- that the young man went loco all three nights. This is undoubtedly the state record as it ages 35.3 points per game. This lids for the tournament during years when Snow College, Branch A. C. Weber College audi those other academies of. higher learning competed with the preparatory schools. The 1935 state joust was perhaps the best conducted event of them all. C. Oren Wilson has been handl¬ing the big joust for 19 years which is a lot of time for practice. Uintah Tumbles In Combat With Jordan Huskies JORDAN HIGH defeated Uintah in the feature state tournament game Thursday afternoon to earn the right to play Saturday night for the etate (championship. The Beetdiggers completely outclassed their rivals in the slow, one-sided affair, 30-16. Carroll started the scoring for Jordan with a (setup followed by ; another in rapid order by Kline j Black. Uintah was unable to con¬nect until seven minutes had elapsed and finally Ken Hadlock broke through. The first quarter ended :in favor of Jordan, 7-2. Finally Connect; Two minutes had elapsed in the next period before the ball pene¬trated either hoop. Black, for Jordan, halted the monotony with a sensational long shot. A charity toss by each team and a beautiful long corivereion by Olsen doubled the score, 10-5 for Jordan Cook added one for the Vernal five and Carroll made three and Christen¬sen tanked a long one from the mid-section of the court. The score at the half was 15 to 6. Kline Black opened the second half with a nifty ringer from the side but Hadlock retaliated with a long heave from the center, Black came back with another and Had¬lock converted from the free throw line as the gun sounded to end the third quarter. The. score was 21-9, Carroll converted an uncanny guest shot from the bucket and Bennion Jordan reserve, dribbled in unmo¬lested to boost the Beetdiggers score to 25. Olsen and Hadlock aided the Uintah cause with a pair of spectacular shots to narrow the lead, 25-13. The larger portion of the final quarter was spent an foul pitching. Uintah I G. T.
