Show Tigers To Test Warrior Cage Machine Friday Crucial Contest Arouses Interest In Court Circles Weber College Hoopsters Meet Westminster In Two Games Here Crucial basketball contests this week-end hold the attention of hoopsters of Ogden and Weber High and Weber college. Lengthy practice has been on Ike schedule this week in preparation for second round league games in both the northern division scholastic league and also in the Utah Jaysee league. Ogden High, always contenders for northern division cage honors, face a huge task when tney meet Weber High, traditional rivals on the Warrior court Friday night. The Tigers, hard pressed for three plus periods by Box Elder last week in their opening game, look for a thrilling struggle with the Warriors. Coach Dick Kapple expects to start Packham and Halvorsen at forwards against Weber. He also intimates that he will send Warner to the center post and use Williams and Wayment at guards. CARRY ATTACK Williams, Halvorsen and Pack¬ham carried the bulk of the at¬tack for Ogden against the Bees last week. The Tigers after jetting a man sized scare in the waning minutes of the game, finally rallied to win handily, 32 to 24. Weber High dropped a 20 to 18 decision to Bear River in their opening skirmish. Coach Mark Ballif was well pleased with the showing of his cagers last week. 'With any kind of breaks we might just as well have gained a victory in the first game," said Coach Ballif today. "Our squad will hit its stride shortly and then watch out. We of course, always look forward to a thrilling series with Ogden. The game Friday will be the first meet¬ing between the two teams this season. The return game will be played late in the season at Weber gymnasium." Coach Ballif will start Shupe and Johnson at forwards Friday night. Child will open the game at cen¬ter and Captain Hodson and Wat- kins will see service at guards. Weber's Junior high ream wil play a league game with Burch Creek at five-thirty p. m. Friday and at six-forty-five second team: of Ogden and Weber will clash. The league encounter between the Tigers and Warriors is book¬ed for eight o'clock sharp. LONG PRACTICE Reed Swenson's Weber college athletes paraded through a long practice Tuesday in preparation for their league battles Friday and Saturday with Westminister. The Wildcats trounced the Westminster team 59 to 30 in their opening skirmish last week at SaltLake, but were forced to come . from behind in the closing period to win the second game 30 to 31. "I look for two hectic contests with the Parsons this week end," said Coach Reed Swenson today. "The players of the Weoer squad are in fine condition and we anticipate two thrilling battles." Ballif Pleased At Fine Showing of Weberites In Casaba Sport OGDEN and Weber high hoopsters, traditional ath¬letic rivals, clash Friday night at the Warrior basketball court in a crucial basketball contest. The feature event of the week in region one is scheduled for eight o'clock. The Orange Streaks of Ogden High started the 1937 pennant scramble with a 32 to 24 victory over Box Elder last Friday night at the Weber gymnasium. Weber bower before Bear River on the Bear River court 20 to 18 in their first league test. Coach Dick Kapple of Ogden High is trotting out a green in¬experienced team, but one that features plenty of fight. BOAST SPEED The new edition of the Tiger cage team has speed galore to make up for its lack of height. Ogden's team is minus an out¬standing star. The team performs as a unit and Coach Kapple has two or three combinations that us¬ually click. Halvorsen, Packham, Williams, Warner, and Wayment appear to be the leading contenders for first string posts at the Tiger lair. Coach Mark Ballif is well pleas¬ed with the showing of his charges to date. The Weberites, like the Tigers, are inexperienced and green. "We expect to have a contender for the league championship," said Coach Mark Ballif last night. "Our squad is rapidly rounding into form. We expect to turn the tables on the Tigers when we play host to them Friday night." BALLIF PLEASED Coach Ballif expects to start Johnson and Evans at forwards Friday night against Ogden. Shupe is down as the starting center. Christensen and Miles will proba¬bly start at guards. Logan High, in walloping Preston, 60 to 19, sounded a warning to other teams of the league. The Grizzlies appear to be the team to beat for the division champion¬ship. Box Elder and Bear River clash in the other league headliner of this region Friday night at Brig- ham City. The traditional athletic rivals clash Friday at 8 p. m. on the Warrior court in the headline game of the week in the northern scholastic divi¬sion. The Tigers are perched atop the league with South Cache, Bear Riv¬er and Logan, and hold a slight edge over Weber in their first meeting of the new campaign. Dick Kapple's Orange Streaks showed flashes of form against Box Elder last week in gaining a 32 to 24 decision. The Tigers played ragged ball at stages, but when the chips were down they really went to town. Weber High cagers dropped a de¬cision to Bear River, 20 to 18. The Warriors have engaged in long drills this week in preparation for the first of two games of the cam¬paign with the Tigers. The sec¬ond meeting is carded later in the season on the Weber gymnasium court. Local interest Friday will center on the Ogden-Weber battle. Weber High will depend upon Shupe, John¬son and Hodson to carry the scoring burdens. Dick Kapple boasts a well balanced inexperienced team at Ogden. All of the players, however, have keen eyes for the hoop. Two preliminary games will be carded at Weber High Friday. Preston and North Cache tangle at Richmond Friday and Logan travels to South Cache. In the other northern division game Box Elder will invade Bear River. Weber College courtiers taste two nights of competition against West¬minster Friday and Saturday at the Weber gymnasium. Twelfth Ward M men, coached by Joe McCune, will meet Midvale's M men in a preliminary contest Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Weber gym. Snow College and Branch Aggies meet in two other Jaysee games in the Utah state league Friday and Saturday. |
