Lehi, Ogden Gain Tournament Berths Tigers Repel South Cache; Tintic Loses Thirteen Clubs Certain of Positions in 1937 Meet; Playoffs Listed By MAROWE BRANAGAN The Jist of certain entries in the 1937 state high school basketball tournament, which will be held in the Deseret gym March 17, 18, 19 and 20, was increased to 13 Wed¬nesday night when Ogden and Lehi gained the right to compete in the annual cage classic by tripping South Cache and Tintic, respective¬ly, in playoffs. Ogden clinched second place In the Logan-Ogden district race by humbling South Cache in a game at Brigham City, 24 to 14, and Lehi, Alpine runnerup, toppled Tintic, No bo second place club, 32 to 18, at Pleasant Grove. Three more tourney berths will bo determined before the end of the week. South Cach will oppose North Rich, Rich district champion, at Laketown, Friday, unless overtures on the part of the Spartans to hold the game at Hyrum are accepted; Granite, Jordan district third place team, will encounter Morgan, Sum¬mit district runnerup, Friday at 8 p. m„ in the Deseret gym, and the winner of the South Sevier-North Sevier tourney at Salina will be de¬termined Thursday and Friday nights. Spiirted Competition A glittering array of talent al¬ready is certain to show in the grand finale to the hottest prep campaign in many seasons. Sizzling races in all sections have whetted the appetites of high school cage folowers to fevor pitch. Playoff games to determine positions in the tourney have been the rule rather than the exception, and, regardless of which team gain posts in further playoff tests, the season will go down in history as an unusually successful one from every view-point Pror to the advent of Ogden and Lehi on the tourney horizon, Lo¬gan, Cyprus, Davis, North Summit, American Fork, Springville, Manti, Uintah, Roosevelt, Beaver and Kanab had clinched berths in the state meet. From every angle the fau day joust will be a truly all-state affair. Lehi and Tintic put on a ding- dong battle Wednesday in the game staged in Pleasant Grove. The miners, fighting desperately to upset a team which has had many predecessors appear in the state tourney, held a 7 to 5 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 12 to 10 margin at halftime. Keith Trane, gangling sophomore scoring ace, nicked the hoop for three baskets in the third period and his ability to crash through for needed buckets was the primary reason for the Pioneers holding a 22 to 17 lead at the end of the canto. Sid Manning, captain and forward, rang up one basket and one foul pitch in this frame to help bring the northern Utah county crew a commanding lead. In the final frame, the Miners were limited to one foul toss and Lehi tallied 10 points. McCormick and Wirthlin were the outstanding performers for Tintic, each playing a hangup floor game. Carten, speedy forward, rang up 7 of his team's 18 points. Smith and Gray played sparkling ball on Lehi's defensive line, the latter turning in a particularly bril¬liant performance. Dick Mitchell, elongated center, rang up 8 points. By defeating Tintic, Lehi reenters the tourney following an absence of one year. The Tigers of Ogden were too strong for South Cache in the play-off test at Brigham City. The Junction city youngsters led throughout, quarter scores being 8-2, 12-5 and 8-11 in their favor. Scoring was fairly evenly divided, no one player having an exceptional evening at connecting with the hoop.
