The Salts had no guarding game. The Warriors rushed the Salts off their feet to open the festivi¬ties, getting a 11 to 3 lead in the first five minutes. Thomas, Weber forward, caged three field goals in rapid succession and Wimmer, hustling forward added. Ra clever push shot to the total. Cooper made Salina's only field goal as the quarter ended 4 to 4. Cooper was hot again at the middle of the second period, getting two snappy goals and a foul throw, but Weber stayed out in front on Thomas' long shot from the side. It was 22 to 19 at the half and Salina was rushing the Warriors dizzy. Thomas had 17 points for him¬self half way in the third peri¬od, which was the contributing factor in the Warrior's 32 to 19 lead. At this point the Salts had failed to score since the recess. Granite's Defense Is Enigma To American Fork Cecil Baker, the wizard mentor of Utah basketball, pulled the first upset of the state basketball tourn-ament when his well-coached Gran¬ite five whipped the highly toutsd American Fork Cavemen, 22 to 16. The sparkling shooting of Taylor. Granite forward featured. The Cavemen had a 6 to 1 lead right pronto on goals by Groes- beck and free throws by Groesbeck and McTague, but the clever Granitians, with Taylor and Rynearson on the firing line, soon evened; the count. The American Fork guard line was vulnerable as Taylor got another setup. Taylor was running loco around the Forker defense and the Farmers finished the quarter with an 11 to 6 lead. Guarding Unsteady American Fork looked terribly disorganized and shot wildly at every opportunity. The vaunted A. F. guard line was off its game and the forwards weren't breaking or tailing in their shots. McTague and Deavitt were spectacular on two long shots and the Alpine champs were in the ball game. The half score: Granite 16; American Fork 11. A. F. In Slump Coach Grant Ingersoll's team was still unable to shake its slump, , while the Granitians, always a tournament team, kept plugging away in steady and confident man¬ner. American Fork spurted at the last moment but could not consis¬tently penetrate the strong Granite defense. The gun caught them at 22 to 16. Granite G. T. F. P. Summit Braves Upset Touted Nephi Five Outsizing and outshooting the champion Wasps of Juab County, North Summit Braves won a con-vincing 36 to 31 victory over Nephi in the suppertime tilt. A closely-fought game for three periods ended in a stampede for the Braves during the last stages as result of sensational shooting by Carl Clark, Jack Spriggs and Dan Taylor who counted 30 points of the North Summit total. Brilliant caging by Tommy Pay, Nephi forward, gave the Wasps a 13-7 advantage at .the quarter. The play continued nip-and-tuck until the half, with the Braves en¬joying an 18-17 margin at the mid-point, thanks to continued scoring thrusts by Clark, who ran his in¬dividual total to 11 points for the 16 minutes comprising the first half. North Summit slightly increased its margin in the third period, which stood 27 to 24 for the Braves. The Juab champions were unable to get going in their cus¬tomary calm, deliberate manner, committing many violations and throwing away several passes, ap¬parently from nervousness. Murray Is Impressive In Beating Uintah Quint Murray basketeers looked bif fast and smart in winning their initial tournament game from the veteran Uintah Honeyvenders. The final score, 26 to 18, tells only half the story of the Yellow and Black wave that enveloped the Vernal team, pil¬ing up a 21-7 margin at half time. The Smelterites, playing tight defensive bail, rushed the southerners off their feet to sew up the game in the first half. Johnson, Town- send and Bog- den were exceptionally brilliant for the Jordan champs. Murray start- out hot and ran up nine points be¬fore Anderson tanked Uintah's first points. The ice broken, Vernal made it more interesting, but the Jordan champs were ahead 11-5 at the quarter, Bogden and Johnson doing most of the scoring. The onslaught continued during the second quarter as Murray tanked several long shots to pile up its big half-time advantage. Uintah was sadly off form shooting, the ball staying out of the hoop with disheartening regularity. Hard Luck Shooting Uintah was an entirely different looking team in the second half. Although their shots still refused to go in, the eastern champs managed to pick up five points in the third canto, outscoring the Murrayites 7 to 5. In the final quarter Uintah counted one more basket and two foul pitches while holding; Murray scoreless, but the Honey-Venders started too late and the final count stood 26 to 18 for Mur¬ray. Courageous Rally Ray Anderson, forward, and Sterl Cook, guard, sparked Uintah's be¬lated last-half drive. Johnson was high for Murray with 12 points. Its fine play in the last half stamped Uintah as a favorite stumbling; block for Ogden in the second round. The score: Murray G. T. F.
