Show the day; los team through in For several glorious day dead game Davis cre the sweets of winning a title never before taken by their school. For a few delirious seconds the Darts reveled in a goal long sought, but never gained. And then, with startling suddenness, came the death blow to their hopes, the official announcement that Provo was the ruler of the Utah prep cinder realm. The Bulldogs, thanks to disquali¬fication of the Davis half-mile re¬lay machine, finished the meet with 26 points. Murray was second with 25 counters and the Darts were rele¬gated to third with a total of 24 1/2 points to their credit. Other schools finished as follows: American Fork, 18; Granite, 16; Beaver, 15 1-3; Payson, 15; Logan, 12 5-6; Box Elder, 9; Cyprus, Carbon, 8; Jordan, 8; Greenriver, 7 1/2; South Cache, 6; Hinckley, 5 1-3; Fillmore, 5; Wa¬satch academy, 4 1/2; Dixie, 4; Uin¬tah, 3; Kanab, 3; Lincoln, 3; Span¬ish Fork, 3; Delta, 2 1/2," Gunnison, 2; Hurricane, 2; Milford, 1; Pleasant Grove, 1; Springville, 1. Final Race The meet which ran according to Hoyle for the most part, was really just another good cinder test until the final race of the day, this despite the establishing of two new marks in the prep record books. Don Meissner, the blond streak from Murray, set a new mark in the 220- yard low hurdles, reeling off this dis¬tance in :22.9, eclipsing the former mark of :23.2, set by Davis Camp¬bell of Murray in the 1937 meet. Provo's crack mile relay squad of Champ Tanner, Angus Backman, Bob Cook and Elmer Backman, shattered the mark in this event by running the grueling test in 3:34.5. The old mark of 3:35.6 was set last year by Pleasant Grove. As expected, victory rode on the 880-yard relay event. With 15 events behind them, the Darts confidently awaited the outcome of this race. Just before the race started, offi¬cials announced that Murray led the field with 25 points; Davis was sec¬ond with 24 1/2, and Provo was third with 21. The Darts, however, need¬ed only to finish fourth to get two points and finish ahead of Murray and Provo. Murray did not have a team entered in this race and could hope for nothing better than it al¬ready had. Provo, even if it fin¬ished first, could accumulate only a total of 26 points—which made Davis' chances look rosy. Take Marks The starting runners for the six teams entered took their marks and Vadal Peterson, starter for the day, issued instructions. Val Sheffield, Davis' fighting lead-off runner, jumped the gun and narrowly es-caped doing the same thing a sec¬ond time, which, if he had, would have automatically disqualified the Dart squad then and there. Shef¬field, as if to give his mates a lead they could keep despite the best ef-forts of all rivals, got off to a good start, and at the end of his 220- yard jaunt he was at least seven yards in the van of the field. Burton nner, held his o ton to St ded he r.
