| Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
Brown, leather covered journal. It has a snap closure on the front and the contents are a small, silver three ring binder holding lined paper. There is a leather loop on the inside flap to hold a writing utensil. This journal measures 6 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1/4 inch tall when closed. |

Show of the Eight infantry We were marched away to the Company Street and placed in tents. Herrick, Silva, and I are in the same company. Though not in the same tent. We were given guns with the 18 inch Bayonets, and we carried them at drill in the afternoon. Its some strenous work carrying a gun and also learning to handle it properly. Im learning more every day that it takes more than a uniform to make a soldier. The Manual of arms is what we are to take up now and it sure is something to learn I’m about as awkward with my gun as you can imagine. We are told that this regiment is to go (7) Fri Aug. 23rd 1918 overseas pretty soon. The Corporal told Nash we would be in France inside of a couple of months. If we only can get released from quarantine I’ll be a little relieved of the grouch I’ve had on for a day or so I haven’t had a letter from Mother since the first one I received from her Guess there’s nothing to do tonight but write letters as we can’t go Even to the “Y” tent from here. I do hope we get released tomorrow Sunday Aug 25th 1918 We stood Inspection yesterday morning and were released from quarantine in the afternoon Bramwell & I went over to Palo Alto. Its a nice little town not quite so |
